Two local winter bike commuters join The Slice to talk about the simple things you might need to start biking, and how you might just enjoy winter biking! Inside an Ojibwe Immersion Class: We introduce you to an Ojibwe language teacher, Winonah Ojanen – Gaagige Aanakwadikwe of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Winonah has a passion for language preservation and science! We sat in as she taught an Ojibwe-language-based science lesson at Lowell Elementary of Duluth, Minn. Food Farm’s Rutabaga Giveaway: Once a year, the Food Farm comes into Duluth to give away an unloved root crop - the Rutabaga! With Wild State's curling rink this winter, they even turned one of the rutabagas into a curling stone. The Bean Bag by Linda LeGarde Grover: This episode of The Slice is pieces of an excerpt from Linda LeGarde Grover's book, "Gichigami Hearts," which was previously featured on Native Report's episode about Cultural Storytellers. Winter Ice Creations: For years Walter Sipila has been filling balloons with water, then setting them outside when the temperature is between freezing and 15 degrees. What started as an accidental discovery has turned into a hobby for him. He hopes you'll try it out for yourself and see the incredible beauty in this natural phenomenon! The McCullough Brothers: We caught up with a local sensation, The McCullough Brothers, at the Breeze Inn to learn more about their band. As Long as the Rivers Shall Run: Ellen Sandbeck is a paper cut artist in Duluth, and her exhibit "As Long as the Rivers Shall Run" is available for viewing in the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center at AICHO in Downtown Duluth. Ellen shares her inspiration for this show and let us come along to see the process of installing a new gallery and the opening reception. Afro-Academic Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics: The Duluth Branch NAACP is implementing a national program to encourage and empower high school students in areas they are interested by pairing them with mentors to help them prepare for local, regional, and national competitions.
