4 WPRA NEWS JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023

PRESIDENT CORNER I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and is looking forward to a prosperous New Year! What an exciting finish to the 2022 rodeo season. Congratulations to Hailey Kinsel, our 2022 WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer and Martha Angelone, our 2022 WPRA World Champion Breakaway Roper. I would also like to congratulate Shelley Morgan and Cadee Williams on winning their first average titles in the barrel racing and breakaway roping at the NFR, respectively. So many great milestones, records and memories were made in Las Vegas, including but not limited to:

As noted last month, 2023 will mark another election year. The directors taking office in 2023 and every three years thereafter will be: Badlands, Great Lakes, Prairie, California, Turquoise and Roping Director. We will be adding a roping director to the board of directors based on feedback we received from the membership. Therefore, be sure to read all information that will be coming out regarding the election and those eligible to run for said offices. Nomination ballots will be going out no later than January 12. These are for anyone you would like to nominate. The two individuals with the top number of votes will move onto the election ballot for the circuit positions. A total of four individuals will make the election ballot for the two roping positions. Following the second round of voting the top vote getter for the circuit positions will assume the board position with the top two taking the positions for roping in March. I can’t stress enough that it is very important for you to read the ballot instructions very closely so that your voice in your Association can be heard. Take the time to read carefully and educate yourself on those running that will be serving three-year positions on your Board of Directors. Any questions, feel free to reach out to me, our Vice President Heidi Schmidt or the office. In 2023 only, members will have a choice to submit their nomination and election ballots either digitally or in hard copy form, so be sure to pay attention to that. Let’s start this New Year on a positive note and safe travels during these winter months.

Both rookies (Bayleigh Choate and Josie Conner) qualifying for the NFR in their respective events and setting new rookie earnings records in both barrel racing and breakaway roping Hailey Kinsel surpassing $1 million in NFR earnings alone and winning her fourth world title in six years WPRA Breakaway Roper Martha Angelone becoming the first rodeo athlete to win a world title at the NFR from the State of Virginia and also being recognized with the other athletes during the 10th round world champions ceremony What a great group of women we had representing the Association this year and I thank each of you for that. Looking for even bigger and better things in 2023. Speaking of better in 2023, I would like to say THANK YOU to Leon Vick, Caroline Lukens and the entire National Western Stock Show and Rodeo team for agreeing to and putting on a barrel racing qualifier this year for their rodeo. We also very much appreciate them offering ride times and dragging every 30 minutes during those ride times. Your hard work and efforts did not go unnoticed, and we are excited to see how the rodeo plays out in January.

Dolli competed in barrel racing as well as roping, winning the WPRA Team Roping heeling world title in 2007. Dolli became interested

in rodeo through her husband, Darrell. In March of this year, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Dolli was born Nov. 24, 1950 in Middlesboro, Kentucky, and later graduated high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as her father, Joe Bosworth was an Air Force pilot. Outstanding Barrel & Rope Horse Awards Presented at WPRA World Finals

For the second straight year, Professional’s Choice was the presenting partner of the WPRA World Finals Outstanding Barrel & Rope Horse Awards. Athletes competing at the World Finals had the opportunity to vote on the horse they felt deserved recognition for their performance at the 2022 WPRA World Finals. Those votes combined with the onsite judges determined the outstanding barrel horse and outstanding rope horse for this year’s event. Winning on the barrel racing side was Cayla Small’s horse Frisky Ta Fame and on the roping side was Tanegai Zilverberg’s horse Mister Might Spark “Barley” taking top honors. Congrats to both these ladies and their horses and thanks to Professional’s Choice for this recognition.

The WPRA is now accepting nominations for induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Nominations for 2023 need to be submitted by Feb. 15, 2023. To nominate a barrel racer, they must be retired from rodeo and have won at least one world championship. In addition, individuals can be nominated in the notable category, who are not otherwise eligible in the barrel racing category, as well as barrel horses. GOLDEN AGAIN Kinsel Tops The Barrel Racing Field for Fourth Time in Six

Years By Ted Harbin I

f Hailey Kinsel were as golden as her four buckles, then Sister is the diamond that makes everything shine. Kinsel earned her fourth WPRA world championship when she and DM Sissy Hayday put on a Las Vegas spectacular during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. They won five go-rounds – that includes sharing the fifth go with Lisa Lockhart – and placed on two other nights to earn $182,783 during a 10-day gem of ProRodeo’s grand finale.

In her six trips to the Wrangler NFR, Kinsel has finished no worse than second and has won a total of $1,109,429 at the NFR alone in her career, a true indication of the champion she is and the champion she’s ridden at each one. Even though she had two tipped barrels, Kinsel still found a place in the average (eighth). When she and Sister left the Nevada desert, they were No. 1 in the world standings with $302,172 and outdistanced reigning world champ Jordon Briggs by less than a go-round victory.

Hailey Kinsel and DM Sissy Hayday “Sister” flew through the cloverleaf pattern at the Thomas and Mack winning or sharing the win in five out of 10 rounds en route to their fourth world title. In doing so, they also surpassed the $1 million mark in NFR earnings alone. WPRA photo by Hailey Rae

a little harder. I didn’t come to the NFR in the top two in the world, but it wasn’t like I had to have one of the best NFRs I’ve ever had. “I also came in a little less laser-focused on the world championship. It allowed me to be a little more free. I think that comes from maturity, and it comes from loss from previous years. I think what changed in me was maturing and realizing that so much of this is out of our control. The only reason we get to do this is because of our horses.” That also included the daily grind that led to the hectic 10 December nights. By focusing her attention on the things within her control, Kinsel found a great deal of joy in the experience. Of course, running one of the greatest barrel racing horses of all time certainly helps. “I was going to find the good things in all of it, and I think that has really helped my perspective the last couple of years, even the last couple of days,” she said. “I was going to be happy with myself and my horse regardless of the results, and I think that helped a ton.” Sister is an 11-year-old palomino mare out of Royal Sissy Irish by PC Frenchmans Hayday, and she’s been a rock star since the day Kinsel put her on tour. They’ve won all over the place and, in 2020, set the world record on a standard pattern with a 16.63-second run at Dodge City, Kansas. Four months later, they broke that record with a 16.56 at the Wrangler NFR in Arlington, Texas, during the championship’s COVID-related one-year hiatus from Las Vegas. Sister also owns the four fastest times ever recorded inside the Thomas & Mack Center, with the record being 13.11 seconds in 2017. She and Kinsel have also stopped the clock in 13.13, 13.34 and 13.35 – the last two times came during the last two go-rounds of this year’s finale.

“It’s all still setting in, trying to make sense in my head that we got it done,” said Kinsel of Cotulla, Texas. “I think I was so tired after that it was relieving, not only to have pulled it off but for it all to be over. Maybe once I get my energy back, I’ll really be able to reflect on it and let it set in.” It takes a lot to manage the two weeks in Las Vegas. There are appearances and meetings and practices. Sister still needs attention, even though she has been through this experience six times, and Kinsel had to find time to take care of herself. She battled through the Vegas crud, downed barrels and making sure she met all requirements made of her time, and she still came out a winner. “It’s special,” she said. “It was a hard-fought victory. It was an incredible barrel race. Last year was like that, but it was between two of us; this year there were four of us down to the wire. I was thrilled to be in the mix of that sort of race.” It was a race to the finish line, too. Briggs was coming down the stretch, as was Lisa Lockhart, who was competing at the Wrangler NFR for a 16th consecutive time. Wenda Johnson made a run for the gold, and Shelley Morgan’s consistency shined in her average title. With Kinsel, they made up the top five in the final world standings, and despite penalties on three nights, Emily Beisel finished sixth on the money list thanks to a strong NFR that saw her collect nearly $130,000 in go-round money alone. “I feel like they all feel super unique in their own ways,” Kinsel said of her four Montana Silversmiths gold buckles. “This one definitely felt

Kinsel returned to the Wrangler NFR for the sixth straight year. The Texas cowgirl leaned on some younger horses through the meat of the summer. Sister suffered a bruised foot the first week of June, and Kinsel had already entered through the Fourth of July run at arenas she knew the yellow speedster would like. “She was actually pretty sound pretty quickly, but I didn’t feel like hauling her was the best thing to do,” the jockey said. “I wanted to get her back in firing shape. I had three mares that deserved a chance to go. I didn’t go to Reno (Nevada), but I went to most of the rodeos I entered. “They got the finals made for me in the first month of the summer without her. They got us over the edge. I went ahead and entered the rodeos in the Northwest. I had a fresh horse, so we made a run at it. It was definitely a different season that wasn’t entirely planned, but we just

Hailey Kinsel and Sister didn’t safety up any in the 10th round of the NFR winning the round in a time of 13.35 seconds, the second fastest time of the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The duo entered their sixth NFR ranked 5th but after winning $182,783, they walked away with the world title. WPRA photo by Kenneth Springer

“Sis felt great, and she got weirdly stronger in the last couple of days,” she said. “By the seventh or eighth round, she started running harder. She always tries, but it was like we had a second wind hit us at the end. She’s amazing to be able to get better. She never acts like she gets sick of it, and I would never blame her if she does. “There is nothing like 10 times in a row, one horse, one building. She was particularly amazing how strong she was at the end. Getting some age on her doesn’t seem to be a problem for her. When we came out of the alley in the 10th round, she was like a shot out of a cannon. When she was 6 and ran the 13.11, I remember wise people who were trying to be helpful telling me, ‘You have to make more practice runs.’ Well, she’s 11, and we went from Albuquerque (New Mexico) in September to December without making a run, and she did pretty well.” With age comes maturity, for Kinsel and her prized yellow stead.

rolled with the punches. We just tried to make the best decision for the horse, and all three of the colts exceeded my expectations.” It’s always about the horses for the barrel racers who compete at a high level. They know there’s no shot at the kind of money they can earn without elite runners. For someone like Kinsel, who owns the richest hardware ever made in rodeo and now has a collection of them, there is a value to her skills on the backs of these beautiful beasts built for speed. How does she remain humble? “That’s God,” she said. “That’s my faith and my family, who instilled that in me.” It’s also rodeo, which can turn that roller coaster ride upside down in a hurry. Of course, she has the comfort of knowing Sister is right there to make the ride with her and has for so long. She started her 2017 season just hoping to run with the big dogs a little bit, then came her intercollegiate national title while competing at Texas A&M. Her first NFR was a grand success, and so have the next five. “I just wanted to get into the winter rodeos and give myself a shot at the future,” Kinsel said. “I intended to come home after that first summer and get a job. “It was not the plan for us. We were just going to see how it went and whatever that was going to look like. It’s opened a lot of doors to do what I do. That’s what I’m doing, and that’s because of Sis. More than anything, it’s what she’s continued to do. She’s continued to make this my life, and I’m grateful for that.” Hailey Kinsel has a heart of gold, a gem of a horse and in just six years, she’s changed the face of barrel racing. Not only did Hailey Kinsel and Sister win the world title but they also turned in the fastest time of the 2022 Wrangler NFR in the ninth round when they stopped the clock in 13.34 seconds, besting the time set in the eighth round by first time qualifier Leslie Smalygo in a time of 13.41 seconds. “Here it is five years later, and she makes the next fastest two runs,” she said. “It’s really cool to have the four fastest runs at the NFR, but it’s cooler that she was able to do them four years apart.” It wasn’t long ago that the 14.00-second run was commonly earning first-place go-round checks in Las Vegas. In 2022, there was only one time above 13.90 to sniff a paycheck, and that was for sixth place on opening night. While Sister shined in Las Vegas, she wasn’t the only reason why

that Wenda Johnson won the first round in and she and Sister stopped the clock in 13.61 seconds. After a downed barrel in round No. 1, Kinsel put the pedal to the medal and sped through the cloverleaf pattern in typical fashion. “The first night we spooked at the judge that is right inside the gate that makes sure we come down the alley, but she is just so boogery, that it set her off and cut off my angle going to the first barrel, and we were off from there,” said Kinsel of her run on opening night. “She is just so fast that she doesn’t really give me time to make a timing error, so I had that step by the first and sent me funky coming around headed to the second barrel. I was just a tick behind, and I said she is just so fast that you can’t be a tick behind. “Tonight, I was just determined to keep her square in my hands going into the alleyway, sit back a little bit so when she was running so hard to the first barrel, I could make sure I could be in position and get her to find that first barrel corner. After that it is a lot easier.” Kinsel will move up to run first on the ground on Saturday. “It is awesome because I know she is feeling confident and not having to run through ruts and if she is confident, we can just keep the gas pedal down, so that is the goal,” noted Kinsel on plans for the third round. Finishing second in the round was Margo Crowther in a time of 13.72 seconds. Crowther of North Fort Myers, Florida, is making her first appearance at the Wrangler NFR and is currently third in the average. Johnson had another solid night taking third in a time of 13.75 seconds and leads the average in a time of 27.32 seconds on two runs. Reigning world champion Jordon Briggs is still the No. 1 barrel racer with $205,034 won on the year and is second in the average with 27.62 seconds. Briggs is looking to repeat as both average and world champion after 10 rounds in Las Vegas. Prior to the barrel racing the legendary Charmayne James was honored with an NFR icon award and had a banner unveiled in the Thomas and Mack. The 11-time WPRA World Champion and ProRodeo Hall of Famer joins two other Hall of Famers (Trevor Brazile and Ty Murray) in receiving these inaugural awards in 2022. ROUND 3: TWO WINS OUT OF THREE ROUNDS FOR KINSEL AT WRANGLER NFR

ROUND 1: JOHNSON STEALING MONEY IN VEGAS AT THE 2022 WRANGLER NFR

Wenda Johnson rode Steal Money “Mo” to kickoff the first round of the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, and she was stealing the money from top 15 barrel racers. Johnson and Mo stopped

the clock in 13.57 seconds to take the victory lap and $28,914. This is Johnson’s third trip to the Wrangler NFR and second here in Las Vegas. Being a very meticulous rider, the experience she and Mo gained last year coming down the alleyway at the T&M proved fruitful on night No. 1. “We started building confidence in an alley last year and this year I feel he is a little more game on, focused and ready to go,” said Johnson of the experience gained in in 2021 in Las Vegas. “He was a little excited before I went, so we will work on that as we go forward and try to keep him a little more flat footed and ready to step in the alley lineup and make his run.” Johnson has two very talented horses with her in Las Vegas but chose to go with Mo as Mac takes a little more time to adjust to new surroundings. “They are both so amazing and talented,” said Johnson of both horses owned by High Point Performance Horses. “The only reason I am going to wait on Mac for a few rounds is it takes him a little longer to acclimate. I have noticed that every time I have come out west whether for Reno (Nevada) or here last year, he can still come out and clock but if I give him a little bit more time to acclimate to the dry climate, he will fire a little bit more for me. I don’t think I have a wrong choice.” Kassie Mowry was second in a time of 13.65 seconds aboard CP He Will Be Epic “Will” with reigning world champion Jordon Briggs taking third after being on top of the ground. Finishing fourth, making her first Wrangler NFR appearance and running 15th was Leslie Smalygo and Gus with a 13.80. nightly wins. “I am just laughing as it is such a late night (when you win and go to the nightly buckle presentation) and you have this funny thought during the day that I like to win but second isn’t terrible as you can get to bed sooner. But all jokes aside it is a good reason to be up late.” Plus the money is nice as well as she has added another $28,914 to her winnings for 2022 and is second behind reigning world champion Jordon Briggs. Briggs has $212,496 but Kinsel has climbed up and now has a total of $187,217 with eight more rounds to go. She is the big money winner thus far with $67,827. Johnson leads the average with three clean and fast runs totaling 41.30 seconds. Briggs, who set an average record in 2021, is sitting second with a time of 41.48 seconds. Fan favorites Dona Kay Rule and Lisa Lockhart finished second and third, respectively on the night with times of 13.74 and 13.78. Valor was voted the WPRA Horse With The Most Heart earlier this week by the Top 15. ROUND 4: BEISEL BRINGS THE HEAT IN ROUND 4 AT WRANGLER NFR

ROUND 5: LOCKHART, KINSEL SPLIT THE ROUND 5 WIN AT THE 2022 WRANGLER NFR

It was an NFR Million Dollar winner’s circle during the fifth round. Hailey Kinsel, surpassed the $1 million in NFR earnings during the fourth round and joined Lisa Lockhart in that elite club. Tonight, they shared the round win and added to their figures both picking up $25,882.

“That is really cool but that is Sister’s record,” stated Kinsel about crossing the $1 million in NFR earnings. “I have had a lot of great horses to help but that is all her. To be able to do that in less than six years, I don’t know how to put that into words. “I came into the ProRodeo world when it was booming. The American took off and the rounds started paying better here (NFR), other rodeos started paying more, ground got better…I am a lucky kid.” Kinsel on Sister and Lockhart on Levee tonight and both jockeys stopped the clock in 13.52 seconds, to surpass Kassie Mowry who had a 13.57 second run as the second barrel racer on the pattern. “He has just been gaining confidence,” said Lockhart of the difference in Levee to get the win tonight. “The first round he was very hesitant, and I figured I should give him another chance. In round two he was definitely more confident and tonight he took the bit from me in the alley, and he went when he wanted to go. It wasn’t my plan, but I thought well I better hang on for the ride because I didn’t have much choice as he was going. He was just as strong as could be and our timing was good. It is so impeccable to nail the first barrel here and very hard to do. Once we did that tonight it was just trying to get him to the right spots and see what happened.” This is Kinsel’s third round win of the 2022 NFR and Lockhart’s first but probably not her last. Lockhart leads the average in a time of 68.71 seconds, while Kinsel is eighth after a downed barrel in the first round. Kinsel did move to No. 1 in the world, a spot Jordon Briggs has held since March after winning RodeoHouston. Kinsel is looking for her fourth world title. Briggs is second in the average with a time of 68.94 seconds on five runs. Kinsel has won $105,835 through five rounds and has $225,225 on the season. Briggs is second with $222,289. ROUND 6: SHARING IS CARING, BEISEL AND POZZI TONOZZI SHARE WIN IN ROUND 6

Emily Beisel had been waiting on this night since arriving in Las Vegas and knowing how hard her trusty stead Chongo was working. It all came together for her on Sunday night inside the Thomas and Mack. Beisel took an early lead

being the third racer out on the track setting the bar at 13.60 seconds. Two others came close, Margo Crowther and Lisa Lockhart with times of 13.65 seconds, but it was Beisel’s night. She had three good luck charms that aligned tonight…her husband, Austin, is now in town; she was third out on the ground, which has been the popular spot for three out of four rounds; and she was wearing unicorn socks. “It is so funny, Jimmie Smith Tew sent me out here with some unicorn socks. In Arlington, she cracked her unicorn socks out for her round win (at the 2020 Wrangler NFR) and now I am wearing my unicorn socks tonight,” noted Beisel. “There were plenty of good luck charms going on tonight.” Beisel started her fourth NFR with a fifth-place finish in the first round with a time of 13.82 seconds but was snakebit in the second and third rounds with downed barrels. She knew her horse was working better than he ever has out here so it was just a matter of time. “It is really confidence boosting to have a horse working like Chongo has been working this week,” stated Beisel. “It is a lot easier to fix an overachiever than it is to put a horse back together. He has just been overworking. Trying so hard to be so good and we were just inches from having it right. It is a game of inches. Tonight, I just tried to give him a little more room and it worked out.” Lockhart moved to first in the average in a time of 55.19 seconds on four runs, with reigning average and world champion Jordon Briggs holding down second in the average and still first in the world. Her lead has shrunk and holds only a $13,154 lead over No. 2 Hailey Kinsel, who was fourth on the night in a time of 13.66 seconds. Kinsel is the big money winner in the barrel racing thus far having amassed $79,953 and with that she crossed the $1 million mark in NFR earnings alone. Through four rounds at the 2022 Wrangler NFR, she has won $1,006,599 at the NFR alone.

The winner’s circle in the barrel racing the past two nights at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, presented by Teton Ridge has been crowded with round splits in the fifth and sixth round. During the sixth round it was Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi

and Emily Beisel sharing center stage with identical times of 13.57 seconds. Pozzi Tonozzi was aboard Babe On The Chase “Birdie” and Beisel on Namgis D 33 “Chongo.” It was Birdie that set the pace at continued on page 36
