In the springtime sometimes a honey- bee’s instincts turn to thoughts of travel, far away beyond the flower fields it knows, in search of a new home. At least, that is true for a queen bee. Which explains why Alexis Maisonneuve found a temporary new addition to his yard when he looked outside on a Friday morn- ing before the last full weekend of May and saw a swarm of bees all huddled up and cuddled up in a huge, almost hive-like gath- ering on the branch of his crabapple tree. “We saw a cloud of bees passing by,” Mai- sonneuve said, recalling the incident. What surprised him was when the swarm decided to settle down in his tree for a rest. They gathered there for a couple hours be- fore breaking up and flying off again in a buzzing cloud. “The bees do this when the queen is searching for a hive,” Maisonneuve said, af- ter talking to a relative about the incident. “The workers all swarm around her to pro- tect her.” Bee lore explains that this is a natural part of a hive’s life cycle. When an existing hive’s population starts increasing to the point where it could become overcrowded, the

Bee swarms like this one in Alexis Maisonneuve’s crabapple tree are an uncommon, but not unusual, site in the spring when honeybees are in flight as their queen searches for a new colony site.
current queen lays more eggs which are ge- netically-tailored to hatch out new queens who will, after they become young adults, compete among themselves to determine who will be the next queen of the hive. Meanwhile the old queen leaves the hive in search of a place to set up a new colony. Many of the original hive’s workers go with her and protect her by swarming until she
finds a suitable site. Local beekeepers, like Louis Houle in Cas- selman, are willing, to help collect a swarm if it seems like a queen and her workers plan on settling down on someone’s property, either in a tree or inside a sheltered building or the house. Local beekeepers welcome the chance to add “new blood” to their own existing colonies of honeybees.
