A very warm welcome to our award - winning students, their families, teachers, school councilors, distinguished guests, and our wonderful community partners to this auspicious ceremony. Tonight is a celebration of student excellence in a range of key learning areas and disciplines. The strength of our College is our ability to integrate, challenge and implement contemporary curriculum programs effectively across both the primary and secondary levels, to create a culture of excellence in learning and an environment of high expectation. Our award winners lead by example and are a credit to themselves and to their families who provide encouragement, support and guidance each and every day. The Lakes South Morang College ’ s ability to operate as a high performing school is underpinned by the successful and positive partnerships it fosters between students, teachers, families and the community. To acknowledge the importance of this commitment, the College has engaged with our renowned learning partners and providers to present awards in the multi disciplines of their expertise. The knowledge and experience that our extended community instils to our programs is invaluable and pivotal to our success. Finally, to our wonderful and committed teachers, support staff and School Council, thank you for believing in our young people and leading the journey. I hope everyone has a memorable evening in a venue that befits this occasion and is as proud as I am of our student achievements.

WHAT IS MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES THEORY?

Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences proposes eight different types of intelligences; Linguistic, Logical Mathematical, Visual Spatial, Bodily Kinaesthetic, Musical Rhythmic, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal and Naturalist. The Lakes South Morang College proudly celebrates excellence in all of the multiple intelligences.

Presenter: Phillip Whelan

Phillip has extensive experience in the Education sector in a variety of practical and senior leadership roles including, Principal and Learning Specialist. He has performed these roles over a 30 - year span within the 3 Victorian school sectors. Philip is now an education consultant to Victorian schools and is the founder and director of Educate Well. “ Through multiple decades of experience working within schools, I have become increasingly aware of the practices and understandings that help to create and maintain high - performing schools. I recognise and advocate the importance of empowering school staff through meaningful professional learning to build their capacity, support each other and engage students in their learning and wholistic development ”.

LOGICAL MATHEMATICAL The ability to use number effectively and show strong logical reasoning skills

Presenter: Scott McLean

Scott started his teaching career at St Helena Secondary College where he taught Mathematics and Science across Year 7 - 12. Scott brought his wealth of teaching experience to his role as a Learning Specialist at Quantum Victoria where he has taught STEM to students from

Foundation through to Year 12 from across the state. Scott has a PhD in Chemistry and has worked as a post - doctoral researcher. He is also passionate about developing students' literacy and numeracy abilities and promoting scientific literacy.

BODILY KINAESTHETIC The ability to use body and mind to display the performance of physical tasks and functions.

Presenter: Guy Rogers

Senior Constable Guy Rogers has been with Victoria Police for approximately 8 years. In this time, he has worked at numerous stations and at the Family Violence Unit in Broadmeadows, then the Public Order Response Team before moving to the Proactive Police Unit.

In this role, Guy presents at schools across the region, discussing topics such as Cyber Safety, Assaults and Consent. He also runs a young men ’ s program, where he utilises years of martial arts practice to teach control, discipline, good decision making and safe and appropriate conflict resolution.

Guy is passionate about building relationships between young people and the police and is extremely passionate about humanising police through education to help support young people and the community to stay safe.

VISUAL SPATIAL

The ability to perceive the world visually.

Presenter: Catherine McMahon

Catherine grew up in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea where she gained an insight into how education improves life chances. Her first teaching position was teaching indigenous students in Katherine, Northern Territory.

Catherine then taught at a number of inner - city disadvantaged schools in Melbourne. She has worked in public education as a school leader and with refugee and migrant communities for many years. She has seen the different waves of migration from Somalia, to former Yugoslavia to Afghanistan, Syria and the Ukraine. Inclusion and diversity is very important to her.

Catherine was a foundation member of the leadership team at Coburg Senior High School and taught VCE English. She then led the expansion of Coburg Senior High to become Coburg High School catering for Years 7 - 12.

Catherine became Principal of Collingwood English Language School in 2018 and has overseen the creation of a new campus co - located with The Lakes South Morang College opened by the Education Minister Natlie Hutchins in July 2023.

MUSICAL RHYTHMIC The ability to perceive, discriminate, transform and express musical forms.

Presenter: Chantel Zander

Chantel Zander is a passionate Educator at Little Learners Early Education and has recently taken on a management role within the service. Chantel supports the management team and encourages ways to enhance children ’ s everyday

learning and provides support to families beginning their journey at Little Learners.

A true asset to the service, Chantel has not only built relationships with children and families but also the wider community. One of her biggest achievements in 2023 is embarking on a leadership role where she has been able to train, mentor and support staff to achieve positive outcomes. A mother herself, Chantel understands the importance of quality education and building positive relationships with children, families, and the community.

INTERPERSONAL The ability to notice and make distinctions in the intention, motivations, moods, feelings and thoughts of others.

Presenter: Karen Drought

Karen Drought is the new Head of Programs at the Whittlesea Tech School in Epping. She started her career as an Engineer, carrying out roles in both telecommunications and rail industries in Australia and overseas. Karen transitioned into secondary education as a teacher of Mathematics and Science in the inner west of

Melbourne but found herself drawn towards multi - disciplinary, project - based subjects. Before joining the team at the Whittlesea Tech School, Karen was leading community - based problem - solving experiences in schools, designed to get students working with community on local problems. Karen has a particular interest in understanding how secondary education can foster the skills, mindsets and other capabilities that set young people up to thrive in an uncertain future.

Presenter: Jarome Brookes - Metcalf

Jerome Brookes - Metcalf is a Senior Recruitment Officer at La Trobe University. For the past two years Jerome has nurtured a flourishing relationship between The Lakes South Morang College and La Trobe University. In his role Jerome has facilitated multiple school excursions to

the Bundoora campus providing the opportunity for students to experience what it's like to be a Uni student for a day. He has also been the main point of contact for the Careers team at The Lakes. “ I have really enjoyed strengthening the relationship of our two organisations and my intention is to help as many students as possible with their future careers and aspirations. The Aspire Early Entry Program has been a raging success with students at The Lakes and as the years go on we hope to help a lot more students. ” Jerome Brookes - Metcalf

NATURALIST

The ability to recognise, identify and classify species of the natural world.

Presenter: Liam Gallagher

Liam, an Alumni member of The Lakes South Morang College, graduated as a Year 9 in 2012. Liam paved the way forward for young change makers within our College. Liam completed a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and International Relations - University of Melbourne, and, Masters of Disaster and Emergency Management - Charles Darwin University.

Liam is a recipient of the 2019 City of Whittlesea Young Citizen of the Year, the NSW Premier ’ s Bushfire Emergency Citation, was the top ranked student in the postgraduate subject of Environmental Policy from the prestigious Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand, and most recently was awarded a National Emergency Medal. He has volunteered with the City of Whittlesea Australian Day Awards, as a Reconciliation Group Member, and with the Country Fire Authority and as an Australian Army Cadet.
