91% graduation rate at Vankleek Hill high school
provincial and board average in 2013, with more than 90 per cent of students attaining the provincial standard. Grade 9 academic math results have exceeded the provincial average and board average for four of the last five years. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) is reminding residents about the impor- tance of updating their immunizations. The EOHU is now offering the Tdap vac- cine, a three-in-one booster that protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Pertussis is a serious disease that has been on the rise in recent years among teenagers and adults—who can then spread it to infants and younger children. The Tdap vaccine can protect to- day’s teens and adults whose childhood immunization may have worn off. Getting the vaccine can also indirectly help pro- tect newborns and children too young to be vaccinated. The Tdap vaccine is recom- mended for: Children 7 years of age and older who missed their childhood series of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vac- cination, adolescents between 14 and 16 years of age (up to 18 years of age if dose is missed), and adults (19 to 64 years of age) who missed their adolescent dose. There is more work to be done at the school, concedes Edwards. While the school has an impressive graduation rate of 91 per cent, the hope is to improve the attendance rate. VCI wants to boost that through efforts to increase classroom en- gagement and a sense of belonging for all students and their families. The school is also hoping to increase EQAO test results in applied mathematics and has made this a focus of HUB profes-
sional development sessions in coopera- tion with intermediate teachers from Pleas- ant Corners Public School. While VCI scores in this area havemet or exceeded the board and provincial results over the past three testing years, less than 50 per cent of the students at VCI met the provincial standard in 2012-2013. The school is also looking at ways tomake the Bring Your Own Device policy more rel- evant to learning at VCI.

VANKLEEK HILL | Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) boasts a 91 per cent gradua- tion rate, an Upper Canada District School Board report shows. The school is making advances in com- munication through social media, has launched a school yard beautification proj- ect to improve students’ surroundings, and provides professional development oppor- tunities to its staff to increase student en- gagement and deepen their learning. “Students are happy to be in the school and feel they have teachers there who can consistently provide encouragement and can be turned to for advice,” said Superin- tendent Susan Edwards after the report was presented to trustees Wednesday night by Principal Angela Grandy. “Students are also provided with the emotional and social support they may need by staff at VCI.” The review shows the school has effec- tive programs in place to guard student wellness, including the Link Crew initiative, school-based community health partner- ships, anti-bullying programs, the WeBe- long@VCI program, and a strong character education program. The school shows impressive success in EQAO testing. Scores from Ontario Second- ary School Literacy testing beat both the
