One Maag America – Together, as a team, we can accomplish more MAAG Trial Labs: Reduction Lab

Today, the lab only has a pulverizer – shown at the picture in this article. The lab machine is capable to test almost any polymer that is ground ambiently. Among the polymers, tested at the lab are the following: polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, PVC, HDMW, etc. The lab was originally thought of as a lab - show room to run customer trials and demonstrate equipment. The equipment at the display consisted of a pulverizer, a pelletizer, and a rotomodling machine. Pulverizer Lab at MAAG Reduction facility in Kent was started in 2010, when the company moved to the current building, new at that time. The new building was larger and allowed space for a trail lab. Though polyethene is still the most prevalent, the lab has tested quite a few of new types and forms of polyethylene and polypropylene, such as softer polymers, which are becoming more popular. Examples of end-products made from soft polymers could be found in a regular home among items for everyday use. Examples are a spatula, soft grip of a pen or a handle holder. In the last decade, with the fast growth of the chemical industry, there were a lot of developments in the polymer technology. This created a new need for customer to test their newly developed types of polymers including those that have never been pulverized before. Therefore, the pulverizer lab witnessed many new different types of polymers brought to a lab testing for the very first time. Reduction lab runs small capacity trials from 1 to 10 kgs butches to see if the material can be used or can be ground at all. In the past, the major polymer ran at the lab for customer trials was polyethylene.

The lab is used on weekly basis for customer trials and for in- house techs training. Sometimes, it is used for customer training if a problem cannot be resolved as soon as needed, especially internationally. The strangest material ever ground by lab pulverizer was deer antlers, the powder of which was intended to be used in medical purposes and energy drinks. The lab is run by Chuck Bell , Technical Product Manager for Pulverizers.
