MAJORS Accounting Finance HOMETOWN Ogema, Wis. ORGANIZATION Wipfli LLP Wausau, Wis. TITLE Accounting Intern

What I did: Preparation of a wide variety of individual, business entity, and trust tax returns. I learned to use Wipfli’s organizational system for C corporations, S corporations, and partnerships which combine audit and tax accounting records. I learned to make necessary journal entries within this system to complete tax returns and used depreciation software to calculate expenses, gains, and losses on asset sales. Wipfli also gave me the opportunity to get a taste of audit procedures through several engagements. I also gained experience in tax research when I encountered new issues and in professional communication with clients and colleagues. What I liked: One thing I enjoy about tax accounting is that it is detailed, challenging, and no two returns are the same. I appreciate Wipfli’s professional in-office atmosphere where collaboration and knowledge sharing thrive, but also greatly appreciate the flexibility of working from home at times. Wipfli is technologically well-positioned to function well in a remote work environment as their professional resources are available and connected online. This ability to work a hybrid schedule, in-person and remote, helped me balance work and family. Future Dream Job: My original leaning was to one day be self-employed and start my own CPA business. Through this internship, my appreciation for a large CPA firm with a wide network of services grew. I can see how specializing in an interest area and collaborating with others specializing in their area would be beneficial to my professional growth and ability to help others. I don’t have the future set in stone, but one thing I do know is that I want to advance in accounting to a level where I have more advisory interaction with clients to help them make wise financial decisions for their businesses and families.
