graciously sharing with us, His house hold and family, all the fruits of His infinite ministry. In the preaching of the gospel, therefore, He teaches, He commands, He shares; while we learn, obey,, and receive. 2. “If they have called the master ot the house Beelzebub” (v. 25). The word “Beelzebub” occurs only seven times in the New Testament (Matt. 10:25, 12:24, 27; Mk. 3:2?; Lk. 11:15, 18, 19) and probably represents Beelzebub .of the Old Testament (2 Ki. 1:2-16). Thus the god of the Philistines is characterized as the prince of demons, illustrating Paul’s dictum that the sacrifices of the heathen were really offered to demons (1 Cor, 10:20). This alone would explain the awful insult offered to our Lord in attributing His work to Beelzebub. However, there is something else of in terest. In the Greek New Testament the word is really Beelzebul, which means “Lord of the house.” This would suggest that the enemies of Christ had taken His claim to be the "Master of the house” and concocted a spiteful pun, coming within one letter of the Philis tine go'd, the prince of demons. And our Lord, knowing the intents of the heart, took the name as they meant it, not as they said it. 3. “Able to destroy both soul and body In hell” (v. 28). Various modern cults argue here that the word “destroy” means to annihilate. But this is not the meaning of even the English term. Its first meaning is to ruin. When a battle ship is destroyed, it is not annihilated. It becomes simply unfitted to serve the purpose for which it was made. And this is the meaning of the Greek word, which is also used of the Prodigal son when the father said, “He was lost [destroyed].” But he certainly was not annihilated! The truth is that men can exist after they are destroyed, both in this, life and the next. The difference is that the ruined sinner in the present life may be saved, but for the ruin of hell there is no recovery. LESSON: Can you see what I have in these bottles? A . "A fly is in one, and an ant in the other.” Between them there is a lump of sugar. -If I should let them out of the bottles, they both would like to eat the sugar. But the fly would act differ ently after eating than the ant would. When the fly gets all he wants to eat, he goes away and rests until he is hun gry again. When the ant finds some thing good, he tastes it and then hur ries off to tell others. Soon a trail of ants is coming. You will be surprised to hear me say that this ant and fly remind me of peo ple who call themselves Christians, Some hear of Christ, profess to accept Him as Saviour, but never tell others about Him. They are like this fly. Others are saved and go away to tell their friends and bring them to Christ. They are like the ant., This kind of Christian will have great joy in heaven, for Jesus said, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 10:32). It makes us feel sad when we remem ber what Jesus said about those who deny Him. “But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 10:33). Let’s be like the ant and tell others of Christ and know that He will con fess us before His Father in heaven. m ou rn ed u n to yon» and y e h a v e n o t la m ented . 18 F o r John cam e n e ith er e a tin g nor drinking» and th ey sa y , H e h a th a d ev il. 19 T he Son o f m an cam e e a tin g and d rin k in g , and th e y say, B eh old a m an g lu tto n o u s, and a w in eb ib b er, a frien d o f p u b lica n s and sin n e r s. receive this good news. Only some of the Jews scattered here and there would receive Him, just as now only a small part of the people of the world will take Jesus as their Saviour. But Jesus came to bring this message whether people would believe it or not. Our story today tells how Jesus prepared and sent opt some of His friends to help Him spread this ’message among the people. LESSON STORY: You can guess that it was His twelve nearest and best friends, His disciples, whom He chose to do this work. Can you tell me the names of ,these twelve helpers? They were sent out two together to go from place, to place. When Jesus was preparing these friends to go out, He gave them some rules to follow. Let us read from the Bible, what He told them (Matt. 10: 5-16). He warned them that they would ifbt always be welcome and that they would have to suffer for Him, but He told them, too, not to be afraid. Let us read about that (Matt. 10:26-31). God will protect us in this same way when we are telling others about Jesus and His love. Object Lesson I t ' s W ell to T ell OBJECTS: A lump of sugar, an ant, a fly, and two small bottles.
