you buy with the dollar ? “One hundred.”
You would be foolish Indeed if you took the penny when you might have the dollar. Did you ever stop to think that every day people are doing things more foolish than taking a penny when they might have a dollar? Christ said, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). People are tired, but they think that Christ would give them an added bur- derf instead of rest. They turn from Him and keep their burden instead of letting Him take it and give them rest. What a great mistake they are making! Don’t let the devil fool you into think ing you do not need Christ’s rest. Ac cept Him i;oday and know the joy of possessing the rest which He gives. Outline and Exposition I. T he S ower (3-8) ■ HIS parable reveals the charac- . ter and results of -service in Christendom today ( c t . vs. 18- 23). The “seed” is the Word of God which is plentifully and promiscuously sown, without reference to the charac ter of the ground. Nothing is wrong with the seed, nor the sower, nor the sowing; if anything is wrong, it must be looked for in the ground. The “wayside” hearers are the hard ened listeners, impervious to the recep tion of the seed, because of indifference, or hostility, or a silencing conscience, or some other cause. The seed is the Word of God, and the birds are the agents of Satan seeking to catch it away as it falls. The “stony ground” hearers are the superficial ones; they hear with joy, their emotions are stirred, their souls are excited, and the desire for good springs up and they endure for a time. But when th e.truth conflicts with the claims and attractions of the world, these hearers, reveal .that there is no root in them, and theyvfall away. The “thorny ground” hearers are thè ones who yield to the flesh and its de sires. The cares and pleasures and riches of this world overcome whatever desire they have for eternal things, and they also fall away. The “good ground” hearers are those who hear, accept, and believe the Word, and hence bring forth fruit. The fruit is the fruit of the Spirit in Christian growth and character (cS Gal. 5:22, 23). . We should note that full success from the sowing is never manifested: the world is never converted in this age. Hence the sower today should not
