T h e D iv in e C h i l d (1:18-25) S HE Lord Jesus Christ was con ceived as none other ever was (cf. vs. 18-20). ‘‘On this wise” means “in this manner,” that is, unlike those mentioned in verses 2 to J6. The differ ence is in the conception. Christ was conceived by the Holy Ghost, the others by human agency. This is one of the cardinal declarations of the creed of the church, in spite of the attempts of Satan and his ministers to deny it. He was born of the Virgin Mary (vs. 21-23). Thus He is the "seed of the woman,” and the promised child of a virgin (cf. Gen. 3:15; Isa. 7:14). The name “Jesus” is the name connected with both Hih sufferings and His glory (cf. Matt. 27:37; Phil. 2:9-11). He was the son of Joseph, under the law (cf. vs. 24, 25). The law demanded a legal heir for the throne of David; hence Mary must be legally united to Joseph, or Christ could not be King. But the prophets demanded that He be not bom of man; hence Joseph must not be the father, or Christ could not be the Saviour. He must have the legal rights of Joseph but must not be the child of Joseph. The wisdom and power

of God are revealed in the fact that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Ghost and bom of the Virgin Mary, thus meet ing all conditions for His becoming the King of Israel and the Saviour of the world. II. A C hild ' s G reatness (18:1-6) The disciples’ desire for greatness was quite natural, and it went unrebuked. The Lord means for,His own to aspire to true greatness—the higher the as piration, the higher the plane upon which the life will be lived; but there is a false as well as a correct ambition. The path to true greatness lies in be coming as little children (cf. vs. 2, 3). The Lord told His disciples they must be converted and become as children in order to enter the kingdom. He meant that their self-seeking spirit and false ambitions must be rejected before they could enter that kingdom, much less occupy high places therein. This further meant that they must become humble as a child. It is not the innocency or the unselfishness of the child that is here in view, but the trusting, depend ent, humble spirit of childhood to which Christ referred. Then our Lord points out some dan gers. In dealing with childhood, help fulness must ever be manifested and harmfulness avoided (cf. vs. 5, 6). The maintenance and growth of the church depend upon the proper training of the children. The absence of proper reli gious training of children leads to a more rapid deterioration of our Chris tianity than does anything else. III. A C hild ' s B lessedness (19:13-15) Whenever a n o t e d r a b b i passed through the country, it was customary for the women to bring their children to him to receive his blessing. Thus it was when Jesus passed by. The women sought the best for their children and desired them to have our Lord’s bless ing. But the disciples thought Jesus was too great a person to bother with children, and they rebuked the women. But Jesus immediately pointed out that the greatest thing in this world, so far as potentialities are concerned, is a little child. The universe is big, but the child is great. Every Sunday- school teacher should remember the pos sibilities inherent in each child; there may be a Jezebel or a Mary, a Judas
