Christmas package and try to figure out by its shape what it contained? Yes, I think we all have. Try to guess what this package has in it. Now I will untie the ribbon and show you what the package contains. “Just a silver star.” It is not merely a star. We must re member that the greatest gift God ever gave to the world was accompanied with a star. As we turn this star around, we see- that there are letters on each one of the points. We will start with the letter “C” and notice what it spells. “C-H-R-I-S-T.” The star of Bethlehem showed the wise men where to find Christ. In the center of this star is a red cross. It reminds us of thè cross on which Christ, God’s great gift, died and shed His blood for the sins of the world. In thinking of Christmas and gifts, let us never forget the greatest of all gifts, God’s gift of His Son. So outstanding were these evidences of greatness that the people were aston ished and began to wonder concerning who and what He was. But then, as now, familiarity bred contempt. To them, He was just one of them, born in their midst, His family was well known to them, and He appeared to be nothing more than one of themselves. Then Jesus uttered the well-known truth that a prophet is not without honor save .in his own country. The immediate and near, the, well-known and familiar, loses its appeal, while the far off and little known holds an at traction and appeal until it, too, be comes familiar. Where the gospel has been heard repeatedly, it often loses its arresting power* whereas when it is lit tle known or heard it has a stronger appeal. Likewise,, where the Word of God has been constantly heard for gen erations,' it loses its authority, but where it is little known it speaks with Compelling power. Our very advantages are our- dangers. Here is a revelation of the tremendous power of the human heart; it can agree with tMe Lord and see Him perform miracles, or it can disagree with Him and lose the blessings He would give.
