H - ! I

The story of the prayer life of this remarkable man has been told in two edi tions of a book published in India, and in an American edition formerly published by the Bible Institute Colportage Associa tion, Chicago. These two ' volumes have now been combined in one, providing a standard life of John Hyde which fur nishes complete details of his “ family his tory, , his college days, and his labors on the mission field.” Wherever the extra ordinary results of this man’s ministry of intercession have been known, the church has been challenged to emulate his walk with God. 189 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.50. —o— This is an extremely practical book. It discusses the many-sided problems and re sponsibilities of the Christian wife and mother. Mrs. Robertson gets attention at once by quoting the proverb: “Every wise woman planteth her house; but the foolish plucketh it down with her own hands.” Then she drives the nail of conviction deep by saying, “W e sometimes see women do this very thing. Rebekah did it, when she helped Jacob deceive his father and steal flie blessing ; she tore her home in pieces.” From that vantage point, she probes for faults with faithfulness, yet all the while she gently encourages and lifts the defeated or discouraged mother who is conscious of failure. Children, as well as parents, will profit by the careful reading of this book. 126 pages. Revell. Cloth. Price $1.50. —o— Missions in Principle and Practice B y W . H . K n ig h t This volume is intended primarily to be a textbook in schools; but it may also prove helpful to private groups who wish to study the subject of missions. It does not deal with technical or difficult prob lems. It outlines, in the first section, mis sionary principles as revealed in the Bible which is, as the author says, “the greatest book on missions ever written.” The mis sionary idea and plan is traced through both the Old and New Testaments. More practical questions connected with the work of missions are taken up in the sec ond part of the book. Much valuable in formation is given about various mission fields. The author has done his work well. 189 pages. Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Cloth. Price $1.25. —o— The New Sanhedrin, or the Revision of In this little booklet, the author seeks to give “a proper understanding of Jewish psychology and theology,” first, by a study of Israel’s history and Israel’s hope of Messiah. He deals, next, with prophetic predictions of the coming of Messiah. The significance of the Sanhedrin movement, which has recently sprung up among the Jews, is discussed. Mr. Cooper is well qualified to write on these themes. The book may be ordered from the author, 4417 Bernice St., Los Angeles, California. 80 pages. Paper. Price 50c. ingly the facts revealed. And while the reader is moved and searched in his own spirit, he is conscious that his literary taste is being gratified by a flow of Eng lish that is limpid, rhythmic, satisfying. The book is a literary and religious gem. 128 pages. Chicago-Bladet Pub. Co., Chi cago. Cloth. Price $1.00. — o— Illustration from Art B y W il l ia m E . B iederw olf In this new. book, companion volume to “Illustrations from Mythology,” the author gives a collection of illustrations based upon the- world’s most famous works of art. He has “given quite as much attention to the application in each instance as he has to the' illustration it self.” This added feature, not generally found in most books of illustrations, makes the volume of inestimable value to the Christian worker. 178 pages. Richard R. Smith, Inc. Cloth. Price $1.50. The publishers of the “Every Chris tian’s Library” series of books are doing a great service to the church of Christ in furnishing worth while books at popu lar prices. One of the recent additions to the series is a reprint of “In Christ— the Believer’s Union with His Lord” by Dr. A. J. Gordon.. Very few books outlive the author. This is. one that deserves to go on indefinitely in its helpful ministry to those who desire to know - the secret of assurance and spiritual fruitfulness, and who long to be stirred to devout watch fulness for the coming of Christ. 207 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price $1.25. — o— A Lawyer and the Bible B y I. H. L in t o n The chapters of this book attracted wide attention when they first appeared as a series of articles in the Sunday School Times. It is well that they have been put into permanent form. The author deals with the doubter and the skeptic sympathetically and tactfully, but he shatters the defenses of the ration alist with keen logic and with a formid able array of convincing arguments. He proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that a man can think through his intel lectual and religious problems and come out a humble and reverent believer in the whole Christian revelation. Some of the evidence presented cannot be called new, but it is couched in modern terms, and it fits conditions of today. The author avoids technical terms and abstruse rea sonings, but he. aims to convince the man of the street and not alone the learned sage. 204 pages. Harper & Bros. Cloth. Price $1.50. The Virgin Birth of Christ B y J. G r e s h a m M a c h e n

Professor Machen’s new book has al ready gained wide attention from friends and foes who recognize it as a worthy contribution to the literature on the ques- , tion o f the virgin birth .of Christ. None can deny that the work is genuinely schol arly ; nor can any one. prove that Dr. Machen is unfair or insincere in debate. Further, it will be admitted by all that he has' been thorough and exacting in his research. One cannot think of any impor tant phase of the long-drawn-out discus sion of this question which he has omitted to mention. With many others, the pres ent reviewer feels that this volume is likely to mark a turning point in the dis cussion of the question as between con servatives and liberals. To honest students who have been tempted to be shaken by the influence of liberal criticism, it will give positive proof that there is solid ground for the belief that Christ was born of the virgin. 415 pages. Harper & Bros. Cloth. Price $5.00. — o— I Keep ,Thy Solemn Feasts The translator of these two books, John Hendrik DeVries, D.D., has done the Eng lish speaking church a great service in the translation of a number of Dr. Abraham Kuyper’s works. Dr. Kuyper was one of the most remarkable men of modern times —a great statesman and formerly Prime Minister of the Netherlands, an educator of high rank, and, with it all, a humble yet scholarly Christian. His messages are equally suitable for the learned and the unlearned. In the volume, .“Keep Thy Solemn Feasts,” he presents meditations for special seasons, including Christmas, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. In the other volume, “The Shadow of Death,” there are meditations for the sick room and for the death bed. There are brief chapters, breathing the tender, gentle spirit of the Christ. They are, full of comfort and will give encouragement to souls pass ing through darkness and sorrow. Both volumes can be most heartily commended. Approximately 320 pages each. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $2.50 each. — o— : With Him B y A n n a J-. L in d g ren An inviting little volume oh the out side and, as it is opened, a fascinating volume as we turn first to meditations, next to messages, last to stories. Devo tional books are thought by some to have had their day, but here is one that is fresh, free from taint of cant, vibrant with con viction. The writer dares to stand before the mirror of the book and meet unflinch The Shadow of Death B y A b r a h a m K u y pe r
