part of the company’s remarkable growth. Engico takes pride in being a family to all the company members, not just the biological ones. It’s a close-knit team. Rinaldo gives credit to Lawrence Paper Box for the longevity of the first installed machine, which still oper- ates at a Chicago, Illinois-area plant. “Lawrence Paper is a well-organized maintenance company, they have their internal workshop and very skilled technicians,” he said. “From 2006 to 2018, we did not feel the commitment to set up a local Engico sister company for service because Lawrence paper, they are well prepared, well skilled, they do by themselves.” The company’s adherence to quality demands that it strictly control what parts are manufactured in-house and which are provided from outside suppliers. “The complete line we produce is split into two parts,” said Rinaldo. “The first part is the feeder, printer, slotter and die cutter, which requires incredible precision so 70 to 80 percent of the parts are manufactured by a network of suppliers with all the intellectual property belong to Engi- co. The second section of our process includes the folder, stacker, counter ejector, and stitcher. We produce 80 per- cent of the parts ourselves in-house.”

and leaving the possibility for the folder gluer to be used as a stacker.” It was the company’s first foray into a key component of its success: offering multi-function machin- ery. Soon after, Engico patented the independent creaser/ scorer/slotter, and it was apparent the growing operation was going to need more management muscle. Rinaldo argues that he never pressured his children to join the company, but he is thrilled and proud that his son, Marco, and daughter, Valentina, are now key executives at Engico. Since both children had spent many of their va- cations and summers working at the company, they had a deep and intimate knowledge of the business. “Engico was my first job,” said Valentina. “My first day on the job in 2006 was spent on location helping install the first Engico machine in North America at Lawrence Pa- per. I worked for another company for a number of years in order to gather experience outside the family business before returning.”

Valentina has now been back with the company for 16 years and has worked in nearly every department — ser- vice, purchasing, accounting, etc. As the company added new employees, she settled into her current role in sales and marketing, managing customer relationships from the start of the project and continuin after the order is placed. Marco, Engico’s Engineering Manager, also benefitted tremendously from the installation at Lawrence Paper. He lived for seven months near the plant before, during and after installation and learned everything, from how to make printing plates and rotary die cutter tools to understanding the flow of the box plant. “From the moment we get the order until the moment the machine is delivered, installed and switched on at the customer plant, he’s responsible for the relation between the customer and Engico for all the technical aspects— electric power, foundations, buildings—everything,” said Rinaldo. The Mazzola Effect Engico has prospered under guidance from General Manager Daniele Mazzola, as well, whom Benzoni refers to as “my left arm.” Starting with the company 20 years ago, in February of 2006, Mazzola has been in integral 50 April 13, 2026

Engico’s next generation.

Engico has found great success through focusing on a particular area of the market, in this case jumbo machinery. “It is our core business,” Rinaldo explained. No Surprises When it comes to manufacturing and installation, Val- entina sums up the company’s motto as: “No surprises.” “When the machine leaves the company, it’s already been thoroughly tested and adheres to all the specifica- tions set forth in the contract with the customer. The cus- tomer, as well, has already seen the machine performing. The installation at the customer’s plant, of course, also falls under our responsibility. From the day the first container arrives at an installation site until the final day the certifi- cate of acceptance is signed, we have Engico technicians in-house at the customer’s facility. They will also stay be- hind for another month to provide training.” Engico is currently securing a permanent visa for one of
