The ATS Traffic Story
Back in 1966, the only hazard delineation product on the market was the flare pot, a primitive device full of kerosene with a burning wick. A man named Lorne Hooper wanted to create a safer device, so he developed a flashing light fixed to a steel barricade. Lorne launched a small company called Alberta Traffic Supply Ltd., which was the first flashing light barricade rental company in Western Canada. Armed with a handful of business cards and plenty of enthusiasm, Lorne introduced his product to Edmonton. The rest, as they say, is history.
Over the years, Lorne kept meeting the growing needs of the construction industry. His company grew, and as a result of his efforts, ATS Traffic has expanded to become the largest 3M-Certified sign manufacturer and traffic control specialist in Western Canada. We work with communities and municipalities like yours to build safer communities. Now with six locations in four provinces and close to 300 employees, ATS Traffic provides more than road safety products: we get people home safely every day.

Safely Building Infrastructure
At ATS Traffic we work with highway maintenance contractors, road builders, construction companies, utility companies and various industrial clientele to develop, implement and manage their work areas through our expansive team. This service allows them to focus on what they do best while we take care of the logistics of traffic control – which includes the coordination and installation of equipment by certified Worksite Traffic Control technicians. Our On-Street Services Division also offers a full complement of additional services including product installation, TAS drafting & design services, lane closures, flagging and equipment maintenance programs. Heavy construction projects such as roadbuilding and maintenance often involve the presence of work zones, where drivers are presented with additional safety challenges such as confusion around routes, changes in road signs and information overload with additional signage. This, coupled with the presence of workers in close proximity to live traffic, demands that work zone safety must be treated with increased diligence. Risk must be assessed and appropriately managed while working to meet deadlines and budgets. That is where ATS Traffic comes in.

Creating Safer Communities
ATS Traffic works with communities and municipalities across Western Canada to create safer road systems for their citizens. The Safer Communities initiative was designed out of a need identified by our customers for more strategic partnership and expertise. ATS Traffic has been in business for over 50 years, and some of the most important lessons we have learned are that incidents don’t happen in isolation, traffic risk mitigation does not come in a one size fits all package and the need to balance budgets with safety concerns is a constant challenge. Our goal is to better understand the most significant traffic safety concerns in your community, as these are unique to the size of your population, existing infrastructure, budget and internal resources. Identifying and prioritizing needs and creating a set of goals and actions is the first part of our Safer Communities process. By considering the current state of your roads and the resources available to you, ATS Traffic can advise on the most economic but effective way to mitigate risk and reduce liability.

What is a Smart City?
A Smart City is an umbrella of terms used to describe the act of designing a city or an urban development that is more agile and sustainable to support life – in areas cutting across roads, traffic control, sewer systems, security, health and all other aspects of technology. In other words, smart cities utilize technology to improve the lives of residents. When it comes to traf f ic safety applications, smar t devices and technologies allow cities to create more connected traffic systems. This means more data and insight, increased efficiency and improved overall safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. At ATS, we refer to these as Traffic Management applications. Smart Traffic Management is all about using systems and software to regulate the flow of traffic through a city in response to real-time demand. There are several components that factor into what makes a city ‘smart’ when it comes to traffic management. They include: TECHNOLOGY DATA MONITORING SHARING OF INFRASTRUCTURE SHARING OF INFORMATION
SAFETY, WELL-BEING & EFFICIENCY CONNECTIVITY & COMMUNICATION

Building Smarter Cities
ATS Traffic works with cities and municipalities across Canada to implement “smart” applications. According to the World Health Organization, 50 percent of the world’s population lives in cities, and this population is growing by nearly 2 percent every year (on average). The rise of urban living is undoubtedly having an influence on the safety and efficiency of our transport systems. With the amount of technology available, municipalities and cities can get ahead of traff ic management and risk mitigation by investing in smarter technology and utilizing open data platforms. Canadian roadways continue to be plagued with traffic incidents resulting in death or serious injury, with an average of nearly 2000 fatalities a year. This is a crucial area for smart traffic control to have a direct impact on the safety of your residents. The Canadian government is currently funding a $75 million-dollar national smart cities challenge to support municipalities in their efforts to become more connected. There is funding available for technological investments, and we can help guide you as to which systems would be the most effective and economic for your budget!

Rental Overview If your project or event lasts a few days or weeks but less than 170 Days, renting equip- ment is a better solution than buying your own. Our crews bring the equipment to site, set it up, and take it down when the event or project is over. LANE CLOSURE PRODUCTS AVAILABLE FOR RENT: Traffic Trailers ⋅ Urban - 4880 Mini Message Boards ⋅ Urban - 548 Small Message Boards ⋅ Urban/Highways - 320 Medium Message Boards
WHY RENT? Right equipment for the job: A one size fits all strategy can cost more over the course of a project. By renting the equipment needed for specif ic jobs, you can ensure that you have the exact equipment needed to get the job done in a correct and timely manner. Delivery to the jobsite: With a trucking fleet at our disposal, we can get the equipment you need to your jobsite, on the day that you need it. Saving time on and space on the jobsite. Cost saving: By renting the equipment, you avoid the capital investment involved in buying, repairing, storing and moving the equipment from job to job. Allowing you to conserve your capital for other projects and opportunities. Increase your borrowing power: Renting equipment does not show as liability on the balance sheet. Which will allow you to show better assets to liabilities ratio. Complement your existing fleet: If you already own some equipment , renting will allow you to f ill in the gaps on those projects where your existing fleet just might not be the right equipment for the job.

Sign Installation
Foamcore Monument Signage
We are Western Canada’s largest sign manufacturer, and we pro- vide only the highest quality signs using 3M materials. All our sig- nage meets mandated specifcations, and our Installations team can provide ground mount installation for signage with up to two or more sign support posts. Our Installation crew is familiar with the Transportation Associa- tion of Canada's standards which will ensure your signage meets and/or exceeds requirements, reducing your risk of liability.
The foamcore signs supplied by ATS are typically 1/3 of the cost of traditional brick and mortar signs, while ensuring a high qual- ity appearance. The construction and installation of the signs allow for a much safer standalone sign, if a high impact accident was to occur. The materials that comprise the foamcore signs are less damaging than concrete/brick signs. The system also includes breakaway posts, in the event of an incident.
Sign Asset Management
Traffic Control Devices
It can be diffcult to know what signs are out there, especially in large regions and remote areas. This minor inconvenience be- comes a major concern if the incorrect signage is used or disap- pears; and as a result someone is injured or killed. We take care of inventory, reporting, budgeting, and replacement for all of your signage. We take the hassle and liability out of managing your sign inventory.
Road Delineation improves road safety - it helps people choose the appropriate vehicle path, speed, and allows movement on the road to be carried out safely and effciently. Roads that carry higher traffc volumes generally have a higher level of delinea- tion. We have industry leading products and the experience to cor- rectly install them, ensuring a long life span.

Substrates: Highway Extruded Aluminum
Our highway extruded aluminumsign panels are designed for the large ground mount and overhead information, destination and guide signs. The panels are 30cm (12”) wide and 732cm (24’) long (single length), but can be combined for any length/height required. 3M reflective sheeting is rolled onto the individual extruded panels and the lettering and/or symbols are computer cut and applied to the substrate by hand. These panels are then fastened together in the field to form the complete sign. Extruded Aluminum Street Name Blades Extruded aluminum blades are the substrate of choice for municipal street name signs. The “dogbone” extrusion design is long lasting and works in conjunction with our street name brackets. Our street name signs are double-faced and reflectorized with 3M™ High Intensity Prismatic or Diamond Grade™ sheeting on extruded or flat sheet aluminum blades. Standard colors are white characters on green background, white on blue, or black on white. Standard blade widths are 15cm (6”) or 23cm (9”) and available in a variety of lengths, calculated to accommodate the street name. Decorative street name signs to compliment any municipal beautification program are also available. Plywood (HDO/Crezone) HDO (High Density Overlay) panels are made of high quality, exterior-grade plywood. HDO contains a higher resin content for moisture resistance and provides an excellent base for the application of reflective film. Perfect for construction site signs, project signs, subdivision sign, real-estate signs, billboards, double post signs and many more. Available in 1/2” and 3/4” thickness, wood is recommended for sign sizes 120cm x 120cm (4’x4’) and above. If you have questions regarding HDO or Crezone wood substrates, please contact us for additional information. Coroplast Referred to in the industry as “Corex” or “Coro”, coroplast material is predominately used for temporary and promotional signage. Ideal for lawn signs (election, job site, sales, promotion directional, etc.) & real estate signs, site signs for new building projects. Magnetic Our magnetic material comes with a strong white vinyl face perfect for all your magnetic signs needs. It can be screen printed or painted, but is not intended for inkjet printing. Standard is 30 mmmaterial, which is a thickness suitable for vehicle magnets and more. The higher the mill, the thicker the magnet is, and therefore stronger signage.
A substrate in sign manufacturing refers to the physical surface the ink and/or sheeting is applied to. Nearly all materials used in sign making have an inkset or laminate to use specifically for longevity. We always match materials with the proper inkset and/or laminate for optimal quality and longevity. Materials are matched to the substrate as well, and include a range of quality from 1 to 12 years. Aluminum (Flat Sheet) Flat sheet aluminum is the most common substrate for long-to-permanent use signs and is our #1 substrate. Our aluminum blanks are manufactured at our local production facilities. Our standard blanks are manufactured with radius corners, 7/16” holes for mounting and comply with the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC). Available in other sizes. Our aluminum is 50% thicker than many of our competitors. We use a heavy gauge sign grade aluminum alloy that is long lasting and rust free, even in harsh weather extremes and not easily vandalized or bent. The ASTM 5052-H38 sign grade aluminum alloy standard is .081 ” (2mm). Our aluminum is cleaned and degreased,
and cropped edges to prevent injury. ⋅ Sign sheet aluminum grade 5052-H38 ⋅ .081” (2mm) thickness
⋅ Ultimate strength 39,000 PSI (minimum) ⋅ Yield strength 32,000 PSI (minimum) ⋅ Tension Leveled (this leveling technique gives aluminum sheet a superior flatness) ⋅ These specifications are an industry standard and adopted by most government agencies and municipalities

NOTE: Some sign manufacturers will attempt to supply sub- standard, utility grade aluminum and pass it off as sign grade aluminum. The softer properties of utility grade aluminum make it useful in ventilation duct manufacturing and in the electrical industry for tie wires. The softer internal properties make it difficult to visually detect without actually testing the physical properties of the aluminum. This can be accomplished though a Whitney Hand Sheet Metal Punch or tested through an independent metal engineering firm. After time, signs manufactured with utility grade aluminum will begin to bend and deteriorate. ⋅ P.S.I. is defined as “ pounds per square inch ” ⋅ Tension leveling is a superior process of leveling sheet ⋅ The standard for non-tension leveled is 5/16 deviation from flat ⋅ All stated specifications are from “Aluminum Standards & Data” and The Aluminum Association Polystyrene/Styrene High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) offers a consistent, easily printed matte surface for either one or two sided printing applications. This polystyrene product, available in HIPS sheet or rollstock form, is especially suitable for digital printing of displays, POP graphics, signs, translights, WHMIS / TDG tags and cards. It can also be contour cut to any desired shape. Our role as 3M’s Transportation Safety Division is to use 3M Science to help make roads safe and to help Canadians get home safely to their families. That is why 3M Canada is proud to align with the Vision Zero philosophy and to do our part in reducing the number of vulnerable road user fatalities and injuries to zero.

ATS Traffic Product Catalogue 2019
atstraff ic.ca
Smart Sign Program ATS Traffic’s Design, Drafting & Consulting Division, IntelliTrafik, has an asset management program that allows you to better manage your sign inventory and other traffic assets. All desired inventory classes (signs, posts, roadway, guardrail, culverts, pavement markings, etc.) are mapped, virtually tagged, and digitally managed to our cloud- based asset management program. Vehicle mounted LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is used to identify and assign attributes/characteristics to assets. Other methods of data collection exist (data import/on foot) and amalgamation of data from various sources is possible. Why is this important? We’ve learned that many communities do not know exactly what signs and traffic-related assets they have, or their current condition. As a result, they make important decisions without having all the information they need. We call this the Dumb Asset Trap™. When you fall into this trap, you end up with higher-than- necessary operating costs, experience more traffic injuries & fatalities and ultimately, your community’s reputation and image can deteriorate.

Smart Sign Program Members will be shipped Smart Signs to add into their existing inventory. Sign attributes/elements will be programmed into the signs identity (sticker) on our ware- house floor, and will be added to Reflektar (reflektar.com) - our leading edge, cloud-based, world class asset management platform.
