Social impact often gets the least attention when we think about sustainability – but it’s just as important, argues Lisa Sweeting , founder of Green Sense Events

W hen you think about sustainability, what do you think of ? Is it about sustaining your business, about survival, or do you think of the environment? Because, at the moment, with so many of us connecting with nature and the media highlighting the climate emergency, this is what many associate with sustainability. Protecting the planet and ultimately our future is a large part of sustainability and its vital that we are striving to reduce our impact on the environment. But it’s also important to remember that sustainability is about three interconnecting pillars: environmental,

social and the economic impact or in simple terms ‐ people, planet and profit. It’s often social impact that gets the least attention when we think about sustainability. Social impact includes labour standards, health and safety, accessibility, and religious sensitivities, but it’s also about staff engagement, and approval from stakeholders, customers and the local community. An article by Investopedia in 2019, outlines the benefits and drawbacks of hosting the Olympics. What is highlighted is the investment into the area and the creation of jobs.
