Throughout my 18-year career as a physical therapy doctor, I have seen the field expand to treat a growing range of ailments and injuries. We have embraced a wide variety of improved therapies and innovative tools to benefit patients in our community. October is National Physical Therapy Month, a good time to spread the word about physical therapists’ growing impact on the nation’s health. We are running a social media campaign throughout this month to raise awareness throughout our community. Readers of this newsletter and others who help spread the word by following us on Facebook and liking, sharing, and commenting on our posts will be entered into a raffle for a high-quality $130 massage gun, a powerful DIY tool for health and healing. My goal in founding a physical therapy clinic here in Flint has always been to serve the people of the community where I grew up. As a 16-year-old track athlete at Flint Northern High School, I was part of a team that was pushed to the limit, and I had to get physical therapy for a hamstring injury. That was a formative experience, and it led me to commit in my mind and heart to provide the same kind of encouragement and caring treatment for others. As I prepared to graduate from the University of Michigan-Flint with my Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree, I was constantly asked why I planned to stay in Flint when I was heavily recruited to go elsewhere. People offered to fly me to other states, put me in hotel rooms, and take me out for dinners. My goal remained the same — to serve my community’s people and support those here who helped shape me into the person I am today. Over the years, I have noticed a change in how people perceive physical therapy. In the past, it was seen as a treatment for the elderly and inactive. We certainly do help older patients with stiffness, arthritis, and a fear of falling, and we welcome those opportunities. But today, we also see a growing share of younger patients with a wider variety of problems. We can help babies who lack normal reflexes or muscle tone to achieve more typical development. We can assist young children with difficulty walking or rehabilitate young sports participants suffering from strains, sprains, and overuse injuries. We are skilled in treating back pain, integrating some of the manual therapy techniques used by chiropractors and the holistic approach

of osteopaths. We help accident victims recover from broken bones and other injuries. We can address muscle weakness, swelling, numbness, or tingling in the hands or legs. We can help weekend warriors heal the pulled muscles and strained joints from playing too hard in their off-hours. We are also skilled in a relatively new field, women’s health, to assist patients with pelvic floor issues. We have powerful new therapeutic tools to speed healing, including compression boots that aid circulation and Graston Technique soft-tissue massage tools. As a community and society, we have advanced so much in our knowledge of therapeutic methods to ease suffering and rehabilitate ailing and injured patients. In a sense, I see it as our duty to help others in our area learn about these valuable treatments. I hope you will help us fulfill our mission! In addition to earning a chance to win a massage gun, you will be helping us reach more of our neighbors and friends with the healing therapies we can provide. -Dr. Jerome Adams

‘BONE’ VOYAGE

Exploring the Marvels of the Skeletal System

THE FUNNY BONE IS A NERVE. Have you ever hit your funny bone? Well, you are not hitting a bone at all. This area on the body is part of the ulnar nerve, which goes from your neck to your hand. Bone, muscle, and fat typically protect nerves, but a small portion of this nerve on the back of your elbow is more exposed. So, when you hit your funny bone, named for its location near the humerus bone (a homophone of “humorous”), you’re really bumping into the ulnar nerve.

Make no bones about it; our skeletons are a real rib-tickler of fascinating facts! From the impressive strength of our thigh bones to the tiny marvels of the inner ear, your bones are the unsung heroes of your body. So, rest your bones in a comfy chair because we are about to dig up some of the most shocking skeletal secrets. BABIES HAVE MORE BONES THAN ADULTS. Although babies are tiny, their bodies have many bones in a pudgy, little package. Human babies have about 300 bones compared to an adult’s 206. Many extra bones are entirely or partly made of cartilage, allowing the baby to stay flexible in the womb. Over time, the bones fuse and decrease in number. Fracture rates are highest when kids are around ages 11–15, the critical time for significant growth spurts thanks to growth plates that close as we age. HALF OF OUR BONES ARE IN OUR FEET AND HANDS. Did you know that many of our bones are in the smaller extremities of our body? Nearly half of our 206 adult bones are in our hands and feet! Each foot has 26 bones, and our hands both have 27 bones, which is 106 bones. Our hands even have a bonus bone called the pisiform, located on the outside edge of our wrists.

So, now that you’ve “boned up” on the most fascinating fossil facts, give your skeleton a little nod for the incredible things it does to support you and keep you moving!

Stay in the Game: Physical Therapy Yields Big Benefits for Small Kids

Physical therapists are seeing a new generation of patients entering their doors: babies and small children. Physical therapy is being recommended for more children at earlier ages amid growing evidence that early intervention to stimulate muscular, cognitive, and social development can yield lifelong benefits. According to a 2023 research review, physical therapists can encourage children with developmental delays, coordination problems, or conditions such as Down syndrome or autism spectrum disorders to develop self-confidence and independence and engage in active play. Children with Down syndrome, for example, can benefit from therapy to help them move independently, begin walking earlier, and avoid allowing damaging compensating movement patterns to become engrained, according to a 2021 study in the Journal of Physiotherapy. In another

study, bouncing, jumping, and hopping side-to- side during supervised exercise on a trampoline led to improved muscle strength in 7- to 9-year- olds with Down syndrome. For preterm babies, physical therapy can improve their chances of healthy development. A review of nine clinical trials involving 545 babies born preterm showed that sensory stimulation administered by a physical therapist increased the amount of milk they consumed and led to better motor and visual function. Physical therapists can also help families by working with equipment specialists to identify the correct beds, strollers, bath seats, and other equipment to support a child’s mobility. Physical therapists approach children differently than adults, incorporating more play, interaction, and age-appropriate exercises to make therapy fun for kids.

If your child seems to be having problems meeting developmental milestones or is having difficulty walking and navigating the hurdles of everyday life, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for an assessment. We will be glad to conduct a thorough examination, and if physical therapy can help, we will never let your child feel anything less than amazing during their time with us.

A Crowd Shows Up to The Chicken Man’s 40-Day Rotisserie Romp PHILLY’S PECK-ULIAR CELEBRATION

The City of Brotherly Love never ceases to amaze us. In 2022, Alexander Tominsky perhaps didn’t expect just how much his city would support him, but Philadelphia did not disappoint. Tominsky, aka The Chicken Man, posted a flyer stating, “COME WATCH ME EAT AN ENTIRE ROTISSERIE CHICKEN,” along with a modest photo collage of him eating the bird. The “official” event description was equally straightforward: “November 6th will be the 40th consecutive day that I have eaten an entire rotisserie chicken 12 o’clock noon The chicken will be consumed on that abandoned pier near Walmart This is not a party.”

A bit odd for sure, but everyone has the right to eat 40 rotisserie chickens and celebrate said poultry at an abandoned pier. Little did The Chicken Man know that this flyer would become a viral sensation, and a crowd would show up to the abandoned pier on Nov. 6 to cheer him on. Despite people being unsure whether the said rotisserie chicken event was, in fact, real, Philadelphia showed up. And they enthusiastically cheered Tominsky on as he consumed his 40th rotisserie chicken. The uproar only intensified when he triumphantly finished the chicken, standing up and putting his fist in the air (reminiscent of the film hero Rocky Balboa). To make the scene even more iconic, Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of

Philadelphia” played in the background amid the poultry celebration.

The lesson here? We’re not entirely sure — American gluttony? Fifteen minutes of fame? — but it does prove the power of community, especially in Philadelphia. Many in the crowd weren’t sure that said chicken consumption would occur or perhaps questioned why an abandoned pier was the locale of choice. At the end of his binge-eating extravaganza, Tominsky expressed his gratitude for the people who showed up, saying, “Thanks for watching me consume.” Be sure to keep an eye out for The Chicken Man because you never know when he’ll make a rotisserie return.
