Ah, summer—pool covers are off, bathing suits and sunscreen are on, beaches are open, and the hottest pool toys litter the lawn. We are all anxious to jump in. But before everyone lets loose, the highest priority is water safety. Swim lessons for children are strongly suggested. Look for an instructor who is experienced and qualified with certifications in first aid, CPR, and lifeguarding. While you may be tempted to teach your child yourself, an instructor may have a fresh approach and an ability to teach while making it fun. Children should also never be left unattended in or near the pool area or beach, whether they can swim or not. Sun protection is also necessary, so limit your hours in the sun and sit in the shade during peak hours.
