sively herald th e awful fact th a t 9000 clergymen of the English Church are in the Romeward drift! Among the modern pre-Reform ation practices in dulged in by these m inisterial law breakers, and foisted upon a long-suffer ing people are the.follow ing: The S acri fice of th e Mass; P rayers for the dead; Auricular Confession to a p riest; Reserved Sacrament worship; Candle mas; Worship of Mary and her images: P rayers to Saints; K issing th e Crucifix and Blessing of Palms. All th is in a P ro te sta n t Church!! The B aptists are ju stly proud of th e ir appeal to th e Word of God on all m atters of faith and practice, and have ever been regarded as ard en t defenders of the F aith . Under th e caption “H eretic or Loyalist,” an interview ap pears in th e English “B ap tist Times and F reem an,” of May 28th, 1920, w ith the Rev. T. E. Ruth, of Collins St. B aptist Church, Melbourne, Australia. The following are extracts therefrom : On Sunday evening “A fter a session of liturgical worship . . . cu rren t problems are considered in relation to th e words of Jesus w ith much of the freeness of th e public meeting.” Mr. R u th says, “Surely th ere is some profound tru th behind the doctrine of P urgatory. F o r myself I expect like other people I have a k ink somewhere which needs to be straigh tened out eith er H E R E ' OR HEREAFTER. Some process of PURI FICATION WILL BE NEEDED afte r death. . . . Surely th ere is PROGRES SIVE PURIFICATION (? ) where they follow the Lamb w hithersoever He goeth. . . . There were about sixty thousand of them (A ustralians) whose deaths helped to win our life and lib erties, and th e m ajo rity of them according to th e orthodox conceptions of religion, are lost forever. F o r my self I say ‘lost’ means ‘not found y et’; to be ‘unsaved’ does no t mean to be ‘unsaveable.’ The G reat A rchitect of th e Universe, believe me, will not •

waste any SOUL-STUFF.” No tru e B aptist a t h e a rt can be proud of such nonsense as th is; indeed it would be farcical were it not for th e fact th a t whenever a man cuts ad rift from the Holy Bible he somehow or other is caught in th e toils of th e Evil Eye. The far reaching effects of th is mod ern trek towards Rome m ust needs make one rub th e ir eyes in amazement. The most unlikely have fallen victims to th is apostate epidemic. Rev. W. E. Orchard, D.D., is th e m inister of K ing’s Weigh House Chapel (Congregational) of London, England. This chapel it will be remembered by some was th e g reat P u ritan stronghold and the place where Thomas Binney, one of God’s g reat preachers, held fo rth the Word of Life. Dr. Orchard, his very unworthy suc cessor, h as gone so far in his deliberate Rom ish tendencies as to declare, “We m ust stay inside th e F ree Churches (o th er th a n Church of E ngland) to CATHOLICIZE THEM.” This Dr. O rchard is very ably and persistently doing; he has so far ROMANIZED his church as to make it contain an ALTAR, LIGHTED CANDLES, TABERNACLE FOR THE HOST, PRIESTLY VEST MENTS— in a Congregational C hurch! It is th e custom to have “w atchers” keep up a round of visits to th e Re served Sacrament; they bow, they cross themselves and p ro strate themselves be fore th e Host. The service of th e Ex position and Benediction of th e Blessed Sacrament is given prom inence by Dr. Orchard, who mounts th e highest step of the “A ltar” and dispenses th e Bene diction of th e Sacrament over th e con gregation. When th e service is over the people re tire making low bows before th e “ a lta r” and placing th e ir offering in a money box bearing th e words: “ GIFTS FOR THE ALTAR’.’ This in a Congre gational Church!! This movement for “Catholicising th e F ree Churches” has organized itself into a Society, entitled, “The Society of
