T H E K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S where, the Divine life is so strong as in this army. Since Cromwell’s time, th e re has never been anything to equal it. I t is a greift Christian brotherhood. One does not meet soldiers loafing about th e streets; When the army came, three hun dred harlots got notice to leave within five days. The local officials and gentry, begged th at at least a half of these girls be left. “Not one,” said the General, and he had his way. There is no sign of smoking, drinking or gambling. The men are all too busy a t study in the evenings. “It seems to us th a t God has something great to do through this army, where five thousand out of ten thousand profess faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. On th e ■anniversary of Dr. Logan’s death, th e General had me give the whole day to th e army. For one of the addresses, five thousand men were massed around us. After my address, the General spoke for almost an hour. It was the intensest of Gospel addresses. That day Colonel Lu invited me to his tent. He is a wonderful Christian. He looks and acts every inch a soldier, and is thirty-seven years of age. He overflows with the love of God and is always preaching. While traveling in the train recently, several Americans learned th at he w as a Christian. One of them, a religious leader of some note, said to the colonel. “What China needs above all else, is the most up-to-date W estern education and method, in short, th e most up-to-date results of Western civilization.” “I quietly replied,” said the colonel, “ ‘Sir, your ad vice is like supplying us with engines and railroad trucks without the railroad bed to run them on. My country’s need is the living God enthroned in the hearts of her people.’ ” While we were talking of our Lord and His work, the colonel said, “I feel a pressure to give up army work and carry the Gospel to all China’s arm ies.” ABOUT THAT FAMINE BEL IEF A letter ju st received from a mission ary in China who is in the famine dis trict, reveals the fact th a t th e famine re-

I Marvelous Workings \ in China l rem arkable le tte r received from Dr. Jonathan Goforth of Kikungshan, So. Honan, China, shows God’s present marvelous working'In th a t land. The let Dr. Blackstone says, “To me the state ments he makes are most wonderful. I know of nothing like it in the world. It should certainly inspire our hearts with thanksgiving to God.” “General Feng, with his army, has been stationed at Sin Yang Chow. It is the most southerly county in Honan Prov ince. The Peking-Hankow Railway pass es through it, and it is quite near this summer resort. I gave twelve days there, on the invitation of General Feng and the local missionaries. I was only able to give thirteen addresses to the soldiers, and the same number to th e local"Chris tians. It was because th e church would only seat six hundred, and th a t was all required by the Mission. On account of m ilitary duties I could only get the army in the evening. The General has bought a fine Y. M, C. A. army hut, seating over six hundred. At first I had mainly the of ficers. In a few nights the General and they were deeply moved; then he gave me a fresh unit every evening. It was not the best way to promote revival, but it gave a much greater number a chance to ¡bear. There are over four thousand already baptized, and thousands more are preparing for baptism. Every night the army is a busy hive of Bible study class es; twice a week the whole army is thus instructed. It is wonderful what God has done and continues to do in th is army. I know of no Mission station in China ter was addressed to Dr. W. E. Blackstone of Los Angeles, and
