When Isaiah talk s of th e beasts he means th e beasts. The passage form s a parallel to th e well known passage in Romans 8. Isaiah and Paul, chief apos tles of the two covenants, both in ter ru p t th e ir magnificent odes upon the outpouring of th e Spirit to rem ind us th a t th e benefits of th is will he shared by the b ru te creation.— Smith. Leopard lie down w ith th e kid. There are sev eral passages which indicate th a t the very n atu re of wild beasts will he changed during the m illennial reign of Christ in th e land. The wolf, th e leo pard, th e young lion, th e bear, will quietly feed w ith the cow, th e lamb, the kid, th e calf, and th e ir young shall lie down together. They will no- longer be carnivorous. The lion shall eat straw like th e ox. The serpents will no longer be venomous, for th e babe will be un harm ed by asp or adder. No lion (such as we know now— Is. 35:9) shall he there, nor any venomous beast.—Haber- shon. v. 8. Cockatrice’ den. A fabulous serpent, supposed to he hatched from the egg of a cock. The Hebrew means a kind of adder, more venomous th a n th e asp. Possibly th e basilisk is meant, which was though t to poison even w ith its breath..—Bochert. v. 9. As w aters cover th e sea. As th e w aters find th e ir way into every cavern of its depths, so Christianity shall pervade every recess of th e earth in those days.— Jam ieson. v. 10. Six of th e seven ch aracteristic qualities belong in pairs: (1) S pirit of wisdom— originality and sagacity; (2 ) Understanding— insight into mystery and moral discrim ination. ( 3 ) Counsel iau tho rity , perceptive teaching, legislation. (4) Might— om nipotence, power, love. (5) Knowledge — accuracy, prophetic foresight. ( 6 ) F ear of th e Lord—-morality, sp iritu al ity, ethical and judicial. (7) Quick- scented-—sp iritual intuition, instinct. This unfailing divine in stin ct was pe culiarly characteristic of Christ. He de tected evil immediately and beneath all guises.— Pierson. The sp irit of wis dom. Seven gifts of th e Holy Spirit are specified to imply th a t th è perfection of them was to be in Him. Compare Beven spirits (Rev. 1 :4 ).— Brown. v .. 3. Quick understanding. He is keen-scented to discern th e essences of th in g s, a le rt to perceive th e reality be hind th e semblance, to see things as they are. He has knowledge of every secret place.— Jow ett. v. 4.
