Messaging is not restricted to vocal commands, and the various types of alarm sounds can be categorised into messaging, more so when the sound can in some ways deliver a directional indication, for example, by muting one sounder to attract the crowd to the sound of an alternate alarm on a safer route. Conventional fire alarm sounders efficiently warn people in the event of a fire that evacuation is necessary but give no indication of evacuation routes. Illuminated exit signs, which are often ignored as part of the everyday visual clutter, will help only if visible and not obscured by smoke. PA/VA systems can advise where to go but cannot actually guide people along the route. Modern research and technology has developed a system known as Directional Sound Evacuation . If Directional Sound Evacuation (DSE) beacons are triggered, people are given clear audible guidance to their nearest exit. A simple explanation of DSE is that people during an evacuation follow the sounds emitted by the DSE beacons , the beat, volume and frequency of such systems alters in such a way as to attract or repel people from areas and routes.

Measures to Overcome Behavioural Problems. Several measures can be put in place to overcome behavioural problems that could surface in the event of a fire.

Clear Roles and Responsibilities People with special responsibilities should know what to do in the event of a fire and be trained to carry these duties out. They should be known to all staff members and may wear specific clothing, such as a high visibility vest, marked as 'Fire Marshal or Fire Warden'. This will help them to be easily recognised by others and reduce any confusion. Clear Alarms These must be easily recognised by all occupants and be unambiguous. They should be tested weekly and be well maintained. Well-Practised Drills
