• Replace highly flammable materials with less flammable ones • Separate flammable materials from sources of ignition • Use minimum amounts of flammable materials in a workroom (store the bulk outside) • Introduce a smoking policy

Having reduced the risk as far as possible, assess any residual risk to determine whether there are any further measures you need to take to make sure you provide a reasonable level of fire safety. The minimum to considered should be: Fire detection and warning system s: there should be a suitable system in place. This can simply be a “shouted” warning, ranging to a full electrical detection and warning system. Whatever is in place must be effective in warning people in all eventualities. Fighting a small fire: provision of suitable portable fire-extinguishers, to allow trained personnel to extinguish a small fire. Safe emergency routes and exits: to be kept clear at all times. May require fire-resistance and/or an automatic fire- detection system. Exit doors should be simple to open, with possible the aid of a push bar. Other things to consider include: • The provision of emergency lighting • Provision of fire safety signs • Training for staff who may be required to help in a fire situation

Step 4: Record, plan, inform, train and review All significant fire hazards should be recorded which might relate to ignition, fuel, and oxygen sources. Other fire hazards that may affect people being unable to escape from a fire, such as fire and smoke spread, including spreading to adjacent buildings should also be recorded. Other recordable information will include any actions that will need to be taken to reduce the risks to any person. For example, it would be better for an employee to work on the ground floor with other employees, rather than an area on the top floor with no other work colleagues. The results of the assessment should be shared, as appropriate, with workers and others who may visit the premises, and with any other employers who share the premises.
