Events such as fire-related training for staff and practice fire drills should also be recorded (note: training was covered in detail in element 5.4). All fire prevention measures identified in Step 3 should be put in place and recorded. A simple building fire plan may assist in this regard. Review As with any risk assessment, the fire assessment should be kept up to date. This should be done whenever there is a significant change to the premises (which may change the level of risk). This might include: • Increase in (or introduction of) the amount of flammable material to be used

• Changing work patterns, such as introducing a shift system • A change to the number of people using the premises

• Structural alterations to the premises • Changes in Legislation or standards • Periodic (time-based) reviews

The hazardous properties of the substance The risk assessment will need to establish the hazardous properties of the substance that are present or will be present on the premises. A hazardous substance may be found in chemical, physical or biological form it may be of an explosive nature, flammable, toxic or have the ability to oxidise.
