This illustration describes a simplified PPM schedule: Asset Reference: Portable heater # 7892378

Please consider that the frequencies of checking in a PPM system cannot be arrived at in an arbitrary manner and are based partly on life cycles analysis of the components. A factor to be considered in particular with fire management is also the environment the equipment or process will operate in. Management of contractors Having contractors on site can increase the risk of fire. This can be due to several reasons, which include: • Poor selection processes Ensuring that the selection process is sound, and that the selected contractor is competent to do the work required is a good starting point. Contractors risk assessments should incorporate any requirements for fire prevention and protection, together with the site owners own local procedures. Many organisations, particularly those with high fire risk (such as petrochemical plants), will operate a permit to work system. It is imperative that contractor worker have a thorough understanding of this before work starts. This is often by means of a specific PTW training course for contractor supervisors and a site induction course for workers. • Competency of the contractor • Unfamiliarity with the workplace • Unfamiliarity with local fire arrangements (such as control of hot work)
