The HSE (INDG 227) suggests the application of five principles for the safe storage of flammable materials: • Good V entilation • Control of I gnition sources • Suitable C ontainment (containers and bunds) • E xchange a flammable substance for a less flammable one if possible • S eparate flammable substances by distance or the use of firewalls These principles can be remembered by thinking VICES Safe handling and transportation of substances which are capable of exploding If you transport dangerous goods by air, sea, road, rail, or inland waterway, you must pack and transport them according to national and international regulations. The UN Model Regulations put the rules on the different transportation methods into a classification system. This system assigns each dangerous substance or article a class that defines the type of danger the substance presents. Other regulations define the training and qualifications that dangerous goods drivers (and safety advisors) must hold, and when you must use one.
