Emergency Signage supplements the EEL by directing building occupants to the place of safety. National or international requirements will dictate the colour, shape, and patterns of the sign. Examples follow.
Final Exit to a place of safety Everyone within a building should be provided with at least one means of escape from a fire that offers a safe passage to a 'Place of Safety'. This place of safety ideally would be in the open air. Some buildings will allow the final exit to lead to a place of total safety away from the building. Other designs may lead through a protected stairway before the final exit is reached. The place of safety should be sufficiently far away from the building so that no one is at significant risk or harm. The means of escape should be adequately lit and have the appropriate signage in place. Fire and smoke should be removed or restricted along the route to enable occupants to escape by the final exit.
