Dry risers are used when the water pressure of a building would not be enough for fire suppression and in unheated buildings where the pipes could freeze.
Maintenance of fixed installation systems As with all such systems, there are various inspections or maintenance checks that should be undertaken at different
intervals. National legislation or standards may specify particular requirements. In the UK BSEN 12845 lays down maintenance requirements for sprinkler systems. For example, Issues to consider when inspecting fire water systems include: • Water supply and pump • Condition of supply pipes or mains (corrosion issues) • Condition and functionality of sprinkler heads and drench/deluge heads • Confirmation that wet and dry risers are full and empty, respectively • Checking that valves on systems are functional
• Carrying out “live” tests where appropriate (for example, on deluge systems protecting LPG spheres • Checking the condition of hose reels, valves, and nozzles (running water through the hose to check for leaks)
