The Unisa International Music Competition was established in 1982 in Pretoria. Prize winners include pianists Marc-André Hamelin, Dmitri Vorobieff, and Lukáš Vondráček; singers René Flemming, Cecilia Rangwanasha and Johan Botha; cellists Alexander Knasyer and Jerôme Pernoo; violinist Benjamin Schmidt. Famous jury members include Guido Agosti, Georgy Sandor, Marie-Claire Alain, Maria Kliegel, Martina Arroyo, and John O’Conor. Unisa competitions take place every two years and alternate between piano and one of strings, voice, organ, or wind instruments. Unisa is the only competition offering jazz and classical categories in parallel. Winners of the competition secure engagements with South Africa’s leading orchestras and recital venues during the following year.
