Case for Investment Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
A Capital Campaign to Increase Capacity for the Premier Community Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
Message from the Campaign Co-Chairs It is an honor to lead the effort to increase capacity for Callanwolde Fine Arts Center , and , through programming that supports veteran , senior , and underserved youth populations , create a resource that continues to address the ever - present needs of our growing community . In this effort , we genuinely believe the Build . Inspire . Grow . campaign will change lives and will have an impact far beyond what we can see or imagine today . When Callanwolde strengthened its community engagement efforts just two years ago , we had no idea the classes would fill so quickly and the opportunities to extend our reach would be so deeply welcomed and supported . Today , DeKalb County continues to be a strong partner in our commitment to remain an invaluable community resource , and as the opportunity to expand and increase capacity to serve more is before us , we are proudly investing to make it a reality . We are reaching out to community leaders and asking that you join us and consider investing in Callanwolde ’ s mission . Together , we can extend our reach and create positive , lasting change in the lives of those who need it most . As campaign co - chairs , we support this investment because it will result in a significant increase in programming for students who qualify for Title I assistance and will double the capacity for veterans ’ classes – those transitioning out of homelessness , as well as for low - come seniors . The historic and inspiring Callanwolde estate will have capacity for more community and family events and will make invaluable contributions to the immediate neighborhood . We encourage you to read this Case for Investment in its entirety . It provides a snapshot of our journey , the details that make this campaign incredibly meaningful to us , and a description of the impact our outreach efforts have already begun to have .
Thank you in advance for sharing the responsibility to support underserved communities , those who need it most , and our arts community - at - large .
With gratitude and warm regards ,
GLENN D . WARREN , JR . CALLANWOLDE BOARD PRESIDENT

Growing to serve all
Community Engagement By holding Art Scholars in the Mansion and Flex Arts building simultaneously , capacity to increase Title I programming will increase dramatically . Capacity to double classes for veterans – those with PTSD and those transitioning out of homelessness . Capacity to accommodate more programming for low - income seniors . Community at Large By holding Creative Camp in the Mansion and Flex Arts building simultaneously , summer programming for students will double . Increase availability of historic buildings for lower impact classes , events , and rentals . Capacity to generate more revenue with existing buildings being freed up . The new Flex Arts building provides capacity for dance classes , summer camp programming , and other functions . The new Pottery Studio is integral to addressing class demands and the current student wait list . Increased visibility , deepening Callanwolde ’ s footprint in the community .
A comprehensive feasibility study for Callanwolde Fine Arts Center ’ s growth plan was conducted in May 2023 . The study concluded that the plan — serving the community in a much larger capacity through renovation and expansion efforts — directly responds to the growing needs of low - income seniors , veterans , adults transitioning out of homelessness , families transitioning out of homelessness , and students who qualify for Title I and Title III assistance . The number of dance performances and classes at Callanwolde have grown exponentially during the past 50 years . Heavy dance floors in the historical Mansion are placed down and taken up an average of 51 times a year to accommodate a variety of programming .
Current waiting lists for Callanwolde ’ s pottery classes exceed 200 students .
After months of due diligence in exploring effective and sustainable options to significantly increase community engagement efforts and keep up with demand , Callanwolde leadership determined that renovated spaces in the Mansion , the Carriage House , and the Conservatory , as well as the addition of two new buildings is the best pathway to expand Callanwolde ’ s programming and to realize the following outcomes by 2026 :
Increased capacity for future growth . New collaborations and partnerships .

Growing to Serve All
Initiative I – Community Engagement
Supporting underserved communities is an important part of Callanwolde ’ s mission . Expansion and renovation efforts will have a direct , positive impact on Callanwolde ’ s ability to grow Community Engagement programs . The 12 - acre campus , situated in the heart of Atlanta , is the perfect sanctuary to inspire inclusion , belonging , creativity , and rehabilitation . Title I assistance , the largest federal education block grant program , is dedicated to closing the achievement gap for students living in poverty . Callanwolde , in partnership with the DeKalb County School System , has established proven programming for students who lack arts education . By 2027 , Callanwolde endeavors to significantly increase programming for students who qualify for Title I programs , and double capacity for veteran ’ s classes — those with PTSD and those transitioning out of homelessness . Callanwolde will be able to expand their partnership with CaringWorks Hope House , a residential center supporting adults who have experienced homelessness and substance abuse , by providing free art classes and access to live - music performances for individuals in their program . Accommodating new programming for low - income seniors is also an area of focus , along with increasing the number of art workshops onsite at Callanwolde for Title I students , and the number of Title III students served .

Additional dance classes will be held in the new Flex Arts Building , which will serve multiple functions , and the new Pottery Studio will be integral to addressing class demands and the current wait list . Perkins and Will , an architecture firm in Atlanta , was hired to design the master plan . Callanwolde ’ s bold vision for the future starts with building capacity .
The renovated spaces in the Mansion , the Carriage House , and the Conservatory will contribute to the continued availability of these historic buildings for classes , events , and rentals . The two new buildings will provide the capacity for more classes , and free up the existing buildings to generate revenue .
