Callanwolde ' s rich family history began over a century ago , with ownership of the estate transferred throughout the years . In 1972 , Callanwolde was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places , and the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center was opened under the supervision of the DeKalb County Recreation , Parks , and Cultural Affairs Department . Since 1983 , The Callanwolde Foundation has maintained responsibility for the operation of the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center , while DeKalb County continues to maintain the house and grounds . During the past 40 years Callanwolde has seen a vast number of changes supported by numerous capital campaigns and an army of volunteers . Major investments have included a new roof on the mansion , a more diverse leadership team along with higher - quality , full - time staff — including an experienced development director , and success in doubling Jazz on the Lawn attendance . These are examples of what has contributed to Callanwolde ' s ability to grow and have significant impact for more than 50 years . Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is one of Atlanta ' s architectural crown jewels , a strong community partner with DeKalb County Schools and an invaluable resource in Atlanta ' s arts community .
