VISION IN ACTION Term 3 - Week 8
of progress and car park closures as the project develops. Any building project has its challenges, and we all look forward to the ‘gain’ after the ‘pain.’ Thank you for your patience. The Primary school building project is on track for a Term 4 start, and we anticipate a 12 month build. SACSA Football carnivals are being held this week and results will be announced in the next newsletter. Thanks to parents for the early morning drop offs and late pick ups at times, as we afford our children the opportunity to compete against others and display their skills. Thank you also to our staff for their efforts with coaching and umpiring. Year 7 students are using their editorial and advertising skills as they compose their own newspapers next week – watch this space! Year 11 and 12 students participated in a presentation from MTE-SA last week where information was shared on apprenticeships and traineeships. These sessions, and others throughout the year, support students in making decisions on future careers and pathways. Parent volunteers play a vital role in our school as they assist and support teachers on excursions, in- class reading and other activities. We thank all those volunteers who accompanied staff and students on excursions this week and encourage parents who can volunteer, to contact Admin for further information on how to apply. Without volunteer support we would not be in a position to afford students the opportunities to enhance their learning. Please look out for further information on the Reception Information Evening on next week. Enjoy the week ahead as we wind down to the end of Term 3. Anton Visser Acting Principal
A word from the A/Principal
In Psalm 127:1 we read “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” What a powerful reminder that God is front and
centre in our words, thoughts and actions, and that our work comes to nothing without God. My prayer is that God is in all we do and the glory and honour belongs to Him. Following the Public Holiday announcement next Thursday 22 September, we have amended the program. Please look out for information from the Deputy Principals regarding the secondary school Learning Conversations and the Year 4 camp. Last Thursday students and staff went around asking each other: R U OK? This important initiative placed emphasis on people’s mental wellbeing and highlighted the need for us to regularly check in with each other. There were powerful conversations in classrooms and around the school during the day. Please be encouraged to seek support if you notice that someone is struggling in this regard. Our student wellbeing team is skilled and experienced at supporting students through challenging times. Learning journey conversations are happening this week and next. The opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with teachers provides an opportunity to build relationship while discussing academic progress. Please be encouraged to make contact with your child’s teacher/s. The front entrance of the school is wet and messy, leaving builders frustrated at times as the current wet weather further hampers the car park redevelopment project. Completion has been pushed out to the end of October, and we will keep parents informed

Congratulations to Lucy who was selected in the U16 State Metro Basketball team to compete in the Australian Junior Nationals, held in Perth in July. Lucy’s team went undefeated through the minor rounds and their first two finals. They were then defeated by NSW Metro in the Grand Final. Lucy’s all-round skill level meant that she was able to play in a variety of positions and she averaged about 10 points per game with 4.5 rebounds. She will certainly be one to watch out for! Immersion in natural environment is crucial for learning This term, Our Year 1s went on an adventure to discover the many environments that surround our world including natural, maintained and constructed environments. On their ‘natural environment’ adventure they found lots of rubbish lying around the streets and did a great job collecting the litter with their ‘grabber hands’ to support our local community.
the Receptions had a Farm Day at school, the Year 1s have been on an excursion to the Botanical Gardens
and the Year 2s are going to the National Rail Museum. The Year 3s and 4s are working hard preparing for the
School Rocks performance, the Year 5s headed up to Illawonga, Swan Reach for their camp and the Year 6s have been enjoying sharing their Secret Projects in class. Learning Journeys occurred on Monday and Tuesday this week. It is always such a pleasure to see the children excited to share the learning that has been happening at school with their parents and so encouraging to see parents eager to hear all about what their child has been doing at school. Receptions receive special visit from Farmer Darcy’s Travelling Farm Our Reception classes had a very special visit from Farmer Darcy’s Travelling Farm! This opportunity put together learning outcomes from the integrated English, Science and HASS studies this term about ‘On the Farm’. The farm is run by Darcy, an autistic woman who prides herself on inclusivity and providing a welcoming experience for the students. It was recently voted the Best Animal Welfare Small Business in South Australia! It was an invaluable experience for the students to interact with rescued animals, have fun dressing up in ‘farm clothes’ and learning the names of each animal.
Year 5s enjoy unplugging from school at Illawonga Camp Illawonga Camp is an educational campsite just two hours from Adelaide near Swan Reach on the Murray River Our Year 5s enjoyed a few days at camp, enjoying many exciting activities. The camp included an ecology boat tour, archery, gymnastics, the Punyelroo Cave Expedition and kayaking. It was an important camp in the lives of our students, as learning about the ecology of the Murray River taught them about being stewards of the Earth and our natural resources going into the future.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
What a great Term 3 we are having in the Middle School at Torrens Valley Christian School. Many exciting things have been happening this Term. One of the big innitatives that has taken place this term is the introduction of the Wellio program. The Wellio program has been helping all our Middle School students and teachers understand
Student excels in Art Program
In Year 9 Art, students made Modroc (plaster bandage) sculptures then applied a photograph of the sculpture to be the ‘feature article’ of the next issue for the National Geographic. We are so proud of what Naomi Y, Year 9, came up with. What a wonderful talent. Her work was on display at the Art & Technology Show Case at Hope Valley Church.
more about stress anxiety and worry and giving them strategies to cope in stressful, worrying, or anxious moments in life. This term we have also seen the restarting of Middle School Assemblies. These are great times of community and encouragement as we meet and share the things that have been happening. The Year 8 classes have been working hard on learning about honour and how to honour ourselves and others. The Year 7s are busy planning for newspaper day and writing some fantastic articles and the Year 9s a gearing up for camp in week 10. Some exciting things to come! Why Home Economics is such an important Middle School subject Our Year 8s have been mastering their culinary and independent skills in the Home Economics kitchen. This term, they tried their hand at making omelettes. Not only does home economics teach cooking and safety, it also builds responsibility. It teaches our students to use the techniques they learned in class in home life. When they learn how to take care of their household and themselves, they inevitably become more responsible at home. Home economics are also vital for mental health, as it offers a way for students to practice design, creativity and mindfulness.
Thursday the 25th of August was a cold and wet day but that did not dampen the spirits of our players. The Year 7/8 gold boys’ team were undefeated and played Prescott South in the grand final. Our boys out played them and proudly came first. Our Year 7/8 silver boys team came 6th and the play of the day was Micah’s 3 point shot from outside the ring! The girls gold team also came 6th overall. Holly and Alyssa played well together in goals. Nyatony made some good intercepts and was able to change the game around. The girls silver team enjoyed the day of competition and managed to win one game. Harper and Seema were solid in defense and Elizabeth played well as our Goal Attack. Year 11s reconnect with God in the Flinders Ranges The Year 11 Camp to the majestic Flinders Ranges is considered one of the most memorable experiences of many students’ lives. This term, our Year 11 students embarked on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. For many students, this camp is a learning curve in being independent but also working and living together in community. Each morning students rose early to walk up a steep hill next to the camp site to watch the sunrise over Rawnsley Bluff and share in devotions together. They expected God to reveal Himself in new ways on camp. And God certainly did. For many students, the wonder and majesty of the Flinders was a new experience and a chance to understand God’s magnificent creation from a different perspective. The sunrise on the first morning at devotion hill and listening to devotions from teachers and students were noted as especially meaningful times, along with worship in song led by students around the campfire each night. The long running tradition of sharing ‘special person’ gifts followed by a pancake supper on the last night finished the camp in a memorable way.

creating the timetable. The Year 12 students continued their preparation for Graduation, Celebration Day and the Formal as well as trying to stay on target for their final assessments and exams. The Year 11 students have been looking at Year 12 jacket designs and the Year 11 and 12 students together enjoyed a presentation from mteSA looking at employment opportunities through apprenticeships and traineeships. In Year 10, the focus has been on their series on dating and relationships as well as looking at the world of work. I am continually encouraged and blessed by the positivity, engagement and resilience of our Senior School students throughout this busy term. Trevor Coward A/Deputy Principal – Secondary
SENIOR SCHOOL
Our Year 12s were recently visited by a member of mteSA. The mteSA raises awareness of potential apprenticeship and traineeship pathways open to students. The students enjoyed watching inpsiring occupational videos that told stories of successful Australian Apprenticeships. They received extremely relevant tips and resources which they will use for navigating their career direction. By learning how diverse the workplace is and listeniong to the stories and experiences of Australian apprentices, students gained an understanding of just how valuable their unique talents and gifts are! Proverbs 16:3 Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established. Career advice and mentorship vital in final year of school
RACI’s Titration Competition success encourages Chemistry students The RACI’s Titration Competition is designed to encourage secondary students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side, to develop their scientific skills and understanding. It provides students an opportunity to experience conducting an experiment in a laboratory environment at a local university in their state and the chance to compete at a national level. The annual RACI Titration Competition was held again this year and all of the TVCS year 11 and 12 Chemistry students were entered. The first round was held in our school laboratory in term 2 and the results sent to the competition organisers. The best individual results from the first round were Nathan (0.01% error) and Max (0.03%). On September 10 the National Final was held at the Hetzel Laboratories in the city and this time TVCS had one team whose State Final result was sufficient to earn them a place to continue. Well done to Gabriel (0.05%), Nathan (0.38%), and Josh F (0.89%) for their effort on the day. Each member earned a gold medallion and the team overall earned an Excellent Result (both being the highest accolade available in the competition). The final ranked results will be released later in the year. Well done to all the year 11 and 12 Chemistry students for taking part again this year.
