From the President’s Desk

MAHALO NUI LOA for the honor and privilege of serving as your President this past year.

• Strengthened our community connections with our new Community Engagement subcommittee, stronger collaboration with the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF), and ongoing conversations with our Elks Lodge neighbors about areas of mutual interest including our lease and sea level rise. Through all this, we’ve continued to foster the spirit that makes Outrigger Canoe Club a beloved home for us all. Thanks to prudent financial oversight, we maintained stable financial infrastructure with healthy reserves to support our beloved campus while maintaining sustainable cashflow from operations. This includes managing costs when needed to mitigate the impacts of reduced Club usage during the parking structure project as well as unanticipated restrictions on beach access for monk seals. For 2025, we have developed a balanced budget despite inflationary pressures, keeping dues increases modest while carefully managing expenses. I extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated Board, Committee and subcommittee chairs, General Manager Tyler Roukema, and our incredible staff and volunteers—your contributions make all of this possible. As I pass the torch to Art Mallet, your new President, I am confident in his leadership and dedication to the Club. Art has served as President Elect this past year, on the Board for five years, and as the Club’s Treasurer. Mahalo nui loa for your steadfast support over this past year. Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful New Year filled with aloha.

As we approach January 29, we conclude the 2024 Year of the Wood Dragon. The Wood element represents growth and renewal, while the Dragon embodies boldness and dynamic energy. True to these qualities, 2024 was a year of remarkable progress, rejuvenation, and bold initiatives at our Club. Together, we:

• Welcomed 195 new members, in line with last year, and have a waitlist of 129 applicants, up 41 from last year. • Advanced significant capital improvement projects, including those for our parking garage, landscaping, and Logo Shop. athletic strategic plan, with high-performing boys’ indoor and girls’ beach volleyball teams, and junior through senior paddling teams which grew by 55 participants, up 18%, year-over-year. • Celebrated our beach volleyball heritage by hosting our first-ever beach volleyball showcase on Outrigger Canoe Club’s “beach” in front of the Snack Shop, honoring the sport’s origin in 1915 when George “Dad” Center, our Club’s then-head paddling coach, introduced volleyball to the sand at our original Waikīkī location. • Enhanced our competitive athletic programs pursuant to a newly created • Produced updated new member and volunteer orientation videos, describing the Club’s history, offerings, governing structure and volunteer committee opportunities.

➳ The grab-and-go options at the Snack Shop are aplenty. Picky little eaters, athletes and everyone in between can find something quick and tasty for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Smoothies, omelettes, chicken fingers, chili, burgers (even plant-based ones!), hot dogs, sandwiches, kalua pork quesadilla—even beer and wine. As we embark on the New Year, the Food & Beverage team continues to deliver even more healthful options. Spinach & Berries Salad, Veggie Greek Wrap, Smoothies and the Acai Bowl are longtime favorites, but there’s a new Healthy Choice New wholesome menu items add to the already delicious mix of Snack Shop fare.

Green Protein Smoothie on the menu that’s perfect for pre- and post-workout, or as you lounge on the OCC Beach. Avocado Toast is a new-ish item, favorited by the young and young at heart. Loaded with sprouts, fresh tomatoes and a balsamic glaze, it’s like something you’d find at a fancy cafe. A recent addition is the Agedashi Tofu Udon, lightly fried and full of umami flavor. Ginger Ahi Steak (pictured here) is not new, but perhaps a secret hiding in plain sight. The seared ahi, brown rice, salad mix is fresh, oh-so- flavorful, not to mention filling. This delicious dish is a top pick for even the most discerning palate. Stop by the Snack Shop from 7am to 7pm, order online or take it to-go, but definitely make it a point to try these new and coveted menu items.

➳ OCC held its annual Sip & Shop event to kick off the holidays, inviting members and guests to the Club for a curated selection of small businesses from across the islands. It was a beautiful and bustling event complemented by a stunning sherbet-colored sunset. Cute keiki brands included Maui-based Little Fins and a new brand, Wellness Rainbow, that offers books and toys that help build socially and emotionally wise keiki, helmed by OCC member and psychologist Cecily Sakai. Members sipped on specialty wine or refreshing Summer Club bubbles, and sought the perfect gift from Kaia Sage Jewelry, The Indigenous Soap Co., and more. The Community Engagement Committee held its second major event, a Kuilei Cliffs cleanup, in mid-November. By Alice Lunt Cliffs Clean-Up

➳ More than 30 members volunteered to get their hands dirty in support of Kuilei Cliffs, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organiza- tion founded by OCC Boys paddling coach Keoni Kino, Waipa Parker and Ryo Kubota. What started as a small group of friends doing some clearing and maintenance on Saturday mornings before catching a surf has expanded into a mission beyond a mere cleanup project. The commitment of the early volunteers laid the foundation for a thriving movement, with large groups of community organizations helping every week. The Club’s most recent committee, the Outrigger Com- munity Engagement Committee, was thrilled at the oppor- tunity to contribute to this ongoing effort. Over 30 members of OCC came together on a windy fall morning to pull weeds, plant grass, and rake and cut down kiawe trees.

By clearing space for invasive species and planting more native ones, the area now has a natural barrier that prevents erosion and helps protect the marine ecosystem.

OCC volunteers of all ages came out to support the cause, including founder Keoni Kino (embracing a fellow member in the photo above).

By clearing space for invasive species and planting more na- tive ones, the area now has a natural barrier that prevents erosion and helps protect the marine ecosystem. The difference they have made in this area is amazing. Where there was once brush, weeds and kiawe, there is now kou, milo, wiliwili, and more. Where there were places for people to hide, now there is a large grassy area where people can enjoy the view of the ocean. Stop by at sunset, and you’ll see many people sitting in their lawn chairs. Everyone who came out to help felt that they had worked hard to make a difference. It’s very satisfying to see the results of your work. And graciously, the team at Kuilei Cliffs provided a delicious lunch from Panda Express, so members were able to soak in the sunshine after a morning of hard work. Big mahalos to all who came out! And to Michael Libertini for capturing some drone footage of this special day. If you missed it, Keoni and his crew are there every Saturday from 8 to 11 am and welcome volunteers. To learn more about Kuilei Cliffs and to make a donation, visit kuileicliffs.org, and stay tuned for more volunteer opportunities hosted by The Community Engagement Committee.

Thanks to Siana Hunt for unearthing some photos from a past cleanup on the slope of Lē‘ahi. Some of the same people are still coming out to volunteer!

OCC DINING

Click here in the digital issue to see the 2004 Food & Wine Festival photo gallery by @Sean Marrs

The Food & Beverage Department has evolved with the times, and so have the offerings and experiences. By Jasmine Chagnon WINE AND DINE

Aside from the stunning views and rich history, OCC’s robust Food & Bev program affords members a rich experience and an opportunity to create and foster lifelong bonds. “We focus on making this not just the best place, but your favorite place,” says Food & Beverage Director Rede Eder. This sentiment is the very reason why he and his team continue to improve and expand the dining offerings for members. With support from the Board of Direc- tors, managers and employees, it’s Rede’s passion, knowledge, and relationships with top wineries and distributors that have helped him to create new and exciting opportunities and experiences for oenophiles and casual sippers alike. In fact, this year, members can embark on the trip of a lifetime together. Rede has been hard at work organizing an offering that takes a limited number of people to wine country. For years, members have enjoyed exclusive tastings, ex- pertly paired dinners, half-off wine Wednesdays, and more, and now Rede is thrilled to be able to coordinate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A group of about 20 people will be touring win- eries, of course, but there will also be a curated selection of other must-do adventures you won’t want to miss. Stay tuned for more information on this and future wine-focused trips because the inaugural trip may be the first of its kind, but it’s not expected to be the last.

OCC DINING

“… the best wine pairings tend to come from re- gional pairings, where the wine and food may have developed together for generations.” —Rede Eder, Food & Beverage Director

Recently, the team introduced a select number of wine lockers for when special bottles are available, you can purchase and have it stored right downstairs. Corkage fees are waived for those with lockers. Rede tries each wine to make sure it’s some- thing worth highlighting and to see if it could be a candidate for the Club wine list. “Once the wines have been selected, we do research on the wine and winery to see what they already pair with their wines—this is a point of reference for us as the best wine pairings tend to come from regional pairings, where the wine and food may have developed together for generations,” explains Eder. As we enter a new year, whether sharing a sip with loved ones and friends or getting to know someone new at a wine dinner, you're encour- aged to take advantage of these programs to get together with each other, and get the most out of your Club experience. ■

In 2023, OCC held its first ever Food & Wine Fes- tival, where Chef Brandon and his team created an exclusive menu of mouthwatering bites to pair with top wines from around the world. The ever-popular program Wine Down Wednesdays launched back in the summer of 2020, offering guests premium wines at everyday prices–fifty percent off, in fact. In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Rede had to think of creative ways to keep the F&B department running and members connected and engaged. He pivoted the once in-person events to a Virtual Wine Dinner series. Guests received two bottles of wine and light food pairings. He successfully kept the vintages flowing, and members connected to each other in a delicious way. Today, Wine Down Wednesday (in person!) is still one of the most loved offerings. If you're interested in something not on the menu, Rede is happy to see what special bottles might be available in the cellar. Yes, there’s a wine cellar at the Club! And it’s stocked with impressive wines that allow mem- bers to enjoy favorites and make new discoveries.

Event goers enjoyed a night of fine food and wine under the stars at OCC's annual Food & Wine Festival.

CANOE ALLEY SPORTS RESULTS, EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH & MORE

Swift Strokes The 107th Castle Swim saw 38 participants, including several keiki, and the result was a remarkable race. By Candes Gentry ➳ The Castle Swim, an iconic event hosted by the Outrigger Canoe Club (OCC), was first established in 1917 as part of a month-long aquatic carnival. This year’s swim celebrated over a century of tradition and competition. The race has its roots in the club’s early history, showcasing the talents of its members, many of whom were Olympic and AAU champions. This year, the Castle Swim took place on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, as it has many times since 1975, drawing in a diverse group of participants. The event kicked off with three swim socials that helped swimmers build confidence and endurance in the ocean, led by accomplished club open water swimmers. A clever addition by Committee Chair Ben Komer was the introduction of a rest raft at the halfway point, offering tired swimmers a chance to take a break, hydrate with electrolyte drinks, and connect with friends. Swimmers had the option to wear fins or masks, making the event accessible and enjoyable for all skill levels. The competition culminated in a thrilling finish, with Lectie Altman-Batula edging out Ian Lee for first place overall. Lectie joins the likes of Kristi Torkildson and Sandie Easton as women who finished first overall and will receive the honor of having her name on the prestigious Castle Swim Perpetual Trophy. All first-place finishers received prizes of stylish Over Under snorkel masks provided by club member Will Estes. The legacy of the Castle Swim is underscored by notable past winners, such as Jimmy Dean and Chris Moore, who each have nine victories to their names. This year’s event was made even more special by former swim committee chairs like Gerry DeBenedetti and Stefan Reinke volunteering and taking part in the event. As the Castle Swim continues to evolve, it remains a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and competition within the swimming community, celebrating not only athletic prowess but also the joy of participating, hosting and giving back to a cherished tradition.

their final hole. Match #2 was much easier for the team of OCC’s best women golfers S.E. Lee and Jaye Gray who quickly overpowered their Pacific Club opponents on their way to an easy 6 & 5 win. In singles matches, OCC went undefeated earning 3.5 points and sealing the team’s victory with Eric Tema, T.C. Gray and Uli Frowein all winning close matches. Hargon Holland also halved his match to contribute half a point. Roger Lyon and Mark Kranz continued the undefeated sweep by halving their 4-ball match. In Match #8, Drea Kia and John Wacker fought hard but were edged out by the Pacific Club team. Thankfully, by then, the match was already in the books. Ryder Cup match- play formatting is used with eight separate match-play (each worth one point, halves for ties) comprised of two-person teams and solo performances in alternate shot, 4-ball and singles games. That morning, OCC drew first blood and set the tone with Cap- tain Meichtry and CJ Day pulling off a narrow Match #1 victory on
