The Community Engagement Committee held its second major event, a Kuilei Cliffs cleanup, in mid-November. By Alice Lunt Cliffs Clean-Up
➳ More than 30 members volunteered to get their hands dirty in support of Kuilei Cliffs, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organiza- tion founded by OCC Boys paddling coach Keoni Kino, Waipa Parker and Ryo Kubota. What started as a small group of friends doing some clearing and maintenance on Saturday mornings before catching a surf has expanded into a mission beyond a mere cleanup project. The commitment of the early volunteers laid the foundation for a thriving movement, with large groups of community organizations helping every week. The Club’s most recent committee, the Outrigger Com- munity Engagement Committee, was thrilled at the oppor- tunity to contribute to this ongoing effort. Over 30 members of OCC came together on a windy fall morning to pull weeds, plant grass, and rake and cut down kiawe trees.
By clearing space for invasive species and planting more native ones, the area now has a natural barrier that prevents erosion and helps protect the marine ecosystem.
