within the believer’s heart that is the most powerful motive for Christian serv ice. When such love really gets a grip on one’s heart it is bound to make him a bold witness for Christ. This love is responsible for man’s new birth (v. 17). It makes everything new for him and sets him against the things of the past. When this has been accomplished in the believer’s heart, there is then committed to him the responsibility of making known God’s plan and purpose to others. He then becomes a minister of reconcilia tion (w . 18,19) and an ambassador for Christ (v. 20). Helps For the Children Honoring Jesus Matt. 21:1-11; Luke 9 :2 3 ,2 4 MEMORY VERSE: "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord" Matt. 21:9. As the time for the death of the Lord Jesus drew near, the Son of God sent two of His disciples into a village to find an ass upon which He could ride into Jeru salem. Kindly as He was, the Saviour also told the disciples to bring the colt with its mother. If any man questioned their action, they were to say, “ The Lord hath need of them,” and the owner would let the animals go. Over 500 years before this time the prophet Zechariah had told, through the Holy Spirit, that the Son of God would enter the city riding upon an ass. The disciples placed their outer gar ments upon the ass for Jesus to sit upon. The multitudes spread their garments in the road for Jesus to ride over. Others lined the road with palm branches. Crowds followed Jesus and sang, “Ho sanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” A few days later these same multitudes were crying, “ Crucify him!” Their lips had praised Him, but their hearts did not love Him. Today we find those who are religious outwardly when they are in church or with other Christians. When they are test ed alone they fail to be loyal to Christ, for they are not bom again. The Holy Spirit can give to Christians the courage

April 3, 1955 The Cross and Christian Discipleship John 12:20-26; 2 Cor. 5:14-19 Pointers on the Lesson No wonder the Cross has been made the symbol of Christianity. Without it there is no salvation, no following of Him. The Cross of Christ is planted deep in the revelation of the Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments. The Desire to See Jesus John 12:20-26 It must have been a joy to the heart of Christ in the midst of so many ex pressions of rejection of Him to note the concern of “ certain Greeks” who were in terested in seeing Him. These were real Gentiles, possibly proselytes to Judaism. But they had heard about Jesus and were made to wonder whether He might not be the Coming One of Jewish prophecy or the One that their own philosophers seemed to dimly suggest would come. Being in Jerusalem at Passover time, they sought out Philip, he of the Greek name which means “ lover of horses,” and who was one of Jesus’ disciples, with the request that they might be intro duced to Him. Philip conferred with An drew and the two of them told Jesus about these inquirers. The Scripture does not say whether Jesus ever revealed Him self to these Greeks but it is quite pos sible that He did. Be that as it may, the Saviour took this opportunity to tell Phil ip and Andrew that without His death upon the Cross no one could ever see Him in a saving way. “ Except a com of wheat [Jesus] fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone” (v. 24). Through His death, not only these Greeks but all who accept Him may possess the fruit of eter nal life. The Lord Jesus then goes on to say that it is the privilege of those who have been made alive because of Him to follow Him. No one is saved by fol lowing Jesus, but those who are saved will follow Him. The Constraint of Christ's Love 2 Cor. 5:14-20 It is the love of Christ (not for Christ)
