A Pioneering Technology to Both Discover and Protect our Planet’s Most Awe-Inspiring Citizen A sudden whale sighting is bound to be a highlight of any polar voyage. But on occasion, direct whale encounters with ocean vessels can put these marvelous creatures at risk. In 2024, Polar Latitudes began teaming up with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to incorporate a state-of- the-art whale detection system on all our voyages. This technology helps us identify whales in our immediate area, increasing your opportunity to experience them up close, while increasing our ability to keep the Seaventure at a safe distance. A 10-Year Partnership with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution We first began partnering with Woods Hole in 2015, providing cabins and logistical support for their critical research into the evolving feeding and migrating habits of Antarctica’s whale population. Another recently- formed partnership, with Oceanities, is aiding their scientists in efforts to document changes in penguin populations due to climate change. Without the kind of support we provide, ongoing research in hard to reach places like Antarctica would simply not be viable for NGOs like Woods Hole and Oceanities. Our relationship with these organizations not only helps enable their critical scientific research, but also enriches the experience and understanding of our guests, through the presentations and insight they provide.
