3 TIPS TO IMPROVE NUTRITION IN THE FALL

1. Harvest Your Herbs. Herbs tend to have higher levels of antioxidants and other phytonutrients than other types of vegetables. So even though we tend to eat them in relatively small quantities, herbs can add a lot of nutrition to foods. 2. Become A Soup Fan. Getting into the habit of making a big pot of soup every weekend is a great way to improve your nutrition all week long. If you’re using a pressure cooker or slow cooker, they also need very little supervision while they are cooking. 3. Make a New Fermented Friend. Probiotic foods help to promote the growth of helpful bacteria in your gut. Good gut bacteria can aid in digestion, nutrient absorption, and help you maintain a healthy weight.

Your sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body – it is approximately 2 centimeters wide, extending all the way down your back, your buttocks, underneath the piriformis muscle, and to the backs of your legs and your feet. It is made up of several nerves that exit your lower back from the lumbarandsacral levels (L4-S3), transmittingsensationandmuscle control. Common culprits of sciatica development include weakness in the

gluteal muscles or tightness in the piriformis muscle, as they can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve. Common sciaticasymptoms. Thesciaticasymptoms reported frompatients tend to vary. Some may experience a deep ache in the buttocks, while others experience a severe pain radiating down one of their legs. It is also possible to feel a tingling or numbness in the back of the leg, calf, or foot. If left too long without proper treatment, irritation can become more severe and affect the strength of your leg muscles. Common sciatica treatment. The safest, easiest, and most effective mode of sciatica treatment is through physical therapy. Physical therapy examines the root cause of pressure on the nerve and works to quickly alleviate that pressure. Our licensed physical therapists will analyze the movements of the muscles surrounding the sciatic nerve, in addition to the back and hip joints. Theywilldesignan individualized treatmentplanbasedon thespecificneeds of each patient, in order to strengthen the affected muscles, improve joint flexibility, and prevent problems from occurring again in the future. FAREWELL GRIFFIN & CASS

Farewell Griffin As one of the newer members of the Activa Physical Therapy team, I am saddened to have to head back to school and leave the team I’ve come to know and love over the course of the summer. When I started out in May, I was unsure if this job would be a good fit for me because I didn’t know as much as the other techs, or I wasn’t experienced enough to help the therapists. I quickly found that this was not the case at all. Samir, Matt, Amena, Alec, Daisy, Kevin, Cass, and Dilva all helped me make the most out of my summer at Activa. Under the guidance and leadership of Samir, Matt, and Amena I learned more about physical therapy as a profession and workplace flow than I had in 2 years of schooling, and with help from all the other techs I was able to develop skills that will continue to serve me in the future of my education and hopefully my career as a physical therapist. At the end of the summer looking back I can honestly say working at Activa I wasn’t just part of a team, I was part of a family. I’ll never forget the time I spent at Activa, and I’m thankful to have spent it with people that I can call close friends and family. I also want to say thank you to the patients I worked with who were patient with me in the beginning when I was still finding my footing in the clinic. It’s been an honor working with all the patients I did and I hope everyone can heal up quick and recover! Farewell Cass I learned a lot from the short time I worked there which I know will stick with me and aid my studies over these next couple years. The experience of working as a tech helped me gain more confidence with working with patients, PTs and other PT techs. Getting to know the many exercises will be extremely beneficial while continuing my education at SLU.

What our recent graduates had to say...

They made my therapy an enjoyable experience! "I came to Activa because I had knee replacement surgery. I was very weak and couldn’t bend my knee after surgery. The therapists and techs were very helpful in slowly working my knee back to a point where I could do things I couldn’t comfortably do before surgery. They made my therapy an enjoyable experience and made sure I was prepared tot the things I needed to do at work and in my life." - Debra L. Now I feel great and can play tennis! "I came in with lots of shoulder and bicep pain and it hurt a lot to play tennis. After working with the great staff, I worked through lots of pain and now I feel great and can play tennis with no pain whatsoever. Everyone who helped me was extremely supportive and patient. They pushed me to improve and feel better everyday." - Tyler B. This experience has been a great one! "Before, I couldn’t walk very well due to tearing my ACL. Now I can walk and climb stairs with ease, which I will use on my study abroad trip to Italy. This experience has been a great one. Thank you for your hard work, Activa." - Kristin P.
