beds, which receive natural lighting filtered by the concrete brise-soleil attached to the north and south facade. The south volume lodges operation rooms and postoperative care supplemented by administrative areas. Wide circulations through the bridge volume link both functions. The load-bearing walls of reinforced concrete provide the structural concept of the building, but nevertheless the tectonics of the building is given by the brise-soleil also built with perfect concrete formwork. This element defines the language of the building, revealing the height and number of floors it contains. The modulation of the brise-soleil (dividing the structural bays into thirds to the exterior) projects towards the facade the location of the transverse structural walls of the building and the distribution (enclosures) and order of the interior spaces (beds and walkways), prioritizing the entry of natural light. This modulation is more dense on the fifth floor, allowing less light to enter the corridor adjacent to the burn victim ward, recognizing therefore the change in function, and defining at an urban level the composition of the façade on the corner.

This building with hospital function opened in 1971, and is located between Ramón Carnicer, Curicó and Vicuña Mackenna Avenue. The master plan proposed the functional separation of the program into two separate volumes articulated by a third intended only for circulation. The main volume, a six-story building, occupies the full extension of the block facing Curicó Street. Two stairwells formed by separate volumes top this volume. These sculptural elements isolated from the main block have balconies that extend the stairway landings towards Bustamante Park and Vicuña Mackenna Avenue. The second volume, lower in height, is placed parallel to Ramón Carnicer, creating a portal that opens towards the park, lodging the emergency access to the hospital. Both volumes and their specific functions are linked by a three-story glass bridge, which starts on the second floor clearing the first level circulation. In the original model made by Despouy, a volume of 11 stories closed the complex to the west, building that was never built. At the functional level, the northern volume concentrates the area for recovery
