El edificio se proyectó en hormigón armado, logrando grandes espacios abiertos de manera de cobijar e incorporar el espacio público; con fachadas vidriadas abiertas hacia la calle, mostrando a la manera de una vitrina la vida interior del centro cultural; y con fachadas herméticas respetando la privacidad de las casas vecinas. La estructura se reforzó con pilares tubulares de acero, los que dispuestos sin un orden aparente atraviesan toda la altura interior del edificio dándole medida y carácter lúdico. La oposición de fachadas abiertas (vidriadas) y cerradas (herméticas) también da cuenta de una postura del proyecto frente a la captación de luz natural y el sol: son las fachadas abiertas las que permiten iluminar el edificio (orientación sur), y las fachadas herméticas las que lo protegen del sol (orientación norte y poniente). Con una superficie total de 1.425 m², el centro cultural cuenta con dos niveles sobre el nivel natural de terreno y dos niveles subterráneos. El uso del subsuelo (la ‘sexta fachada’) permite ampliar la superficie disponible, creando salas iluminadas y ventiladas a través de patios de luz y del hall principal. Dentro de los recintos soterrados, bajo el anfiteatro se encuentra la sala principal, lo que permite gran altura interior y acústica adecuada para actividades musicales, danza, etc. Todo el edificio ha sido terminado en blanco, con la intención de potenciar la luminosidad natural al interior del edificio, y ser a la ciudad un hito y un soporte (una hoja en blanco) donde desarrollar las habilidades artísticas y culturales de los vecinos de Lo Barnechea. The building was designed in reinforced concrete allowing for large open spaces to shelter and integrate the public space; glass facades open to the street to showcase the inner life of the cultural center; closed facades respect the privacy of neighboring homes. The structure includes tubular steel columns arranged in no apparent order and extending to the topmost height of the building, providing a dimensional reference and a playful atmosphere. The opposing open and closed façades express the project’s position regarding the capture of natural light and the sun: the south facing open façades provide natural lighting for the building, and the north and west facing façades are closed to protect from the sun’s rays. With a total area of 1,425 m², the cultural center has two levels above and two below the natural ground level. Below ground use (the “sixth façade”) extends the available floor area creating bright and airy rooms by means of light wells and the main hall. Among the underground areas, the main room under the amphitheater features appropriate height and acoustics for music, dance, etc. The entire building has been painted white in order to enhance natural lighting within the premise and to transform it into a milestone and a medium –as a blank page– for the city, where to cultivate the artistic and cultural skills of the residents of Lo Barnechea.
