Premier’s Report

WILL HODGMAN Premier and Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

It has been a big year for the hospitality industry in Tasmania. Supported by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA), the hospitality industry has contributed to the progress of the T21 Tasmanian Visitor Economy Strategy 2015-202 through their focus on building capacity, capability and community. The Tasmanian Hospitality Association is playing an important role in building our current and future workforce, and have been very active over the past year through their Great Customer Experience (GCE) Program; their THA Young Ambassadors project; and the development of their Hospitality Workforce Plan, which aims to promote careers in hospitality and tourism. The GCE program, with Government support provided through the THA, has seen over 200 venues complete training this year. The GCE has also generated strong sector interest with a further 1500 venues across the hospitality industry to be included in the program in 2017. The THA team are now focussing on contacting businesses during the summer months so these operators are ready to participate in the program in

early 2017 once the traditional peak tourist season is over. We will continue to work with the THA in relation to the implementation of their strategic plan and recognise the THA as a crucial part in the ongoing development and professionalism of our hospitality workforce. Our T21 progress report will be presented at roadshow events, which will run from 22nd November in the North West and conclude in Hobart on the 19th December. This is a great opportunity for hospitality operators to get an update on the work being undertaken in our visitor economy, and of course, to network with other industry stakeholders and government representatives. As the year draws to a close and the summer season begins, I wish you all the best for the festive season and into the New Year. I want to thank Tasmania’s hospitality industry for the hard work and dedication you have all undertaken to make Tasmania’s visitor experience the enjoyable, friendly warm welcome that it is.
