Hospitality Review - Dec 2016

a great way for political parties to show they are serious about supporting communities. We talk a lot about the need to support areas of Tasmania that are doing it tough, but this was an opportunity to convert talk into action. There is no reason why both major parties can’t include regional towns on their conference schedule. We challenge the Liberals to follow our lead and host their next conference in a town that would greatly benefit from the economic stimulus. We have proven in Queenstown that with decent planning and plenty of notice, smaller Tasmanian towns can host events of that size very well. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all your members and readers of this magazine all the best for a safe and enjoyable summer. As usual the summer events calendar across the state is full of things to see and do, with plenty of your members involved in some of the big ones. I hope everyone finds some time to do the things they love with the people close to them. I look forward to working closely with the THA in 2017 as we prepare positive policies to take to the next election.

The Labor Party’s recent state conference in Queenstown was an overwhelming success. More than 200 ALP members and associates made the trip to the West Coast for a weekend of debate and celebration. On behalf of the party I’d like to extend our appreciation to all of the THA members who helped to make our stay so enjoyable and to the locals who made us feel so welcome. Generous hospitality was provided to us all weekend as Labor members made their way around Queenstown and explored other parts of the West Coast. The feedback I got from people who stayed at a number of different accommodation providers was overwhelmingly positive. It’s fair to say the historic Empire Hotel was a focal point for the weekend and the staff there did a brilliant job all weekend. It’s a great pub with a fascinating history and terrific atmosphere. The service and food really was excellent. I believe taking a conference of that size to a regional town is
