Hospitality Review - Dec 2016

Steven Roy CUB’s - Sales Manager - Tasmania

My love for the liquor industry first started when I was working in Liqourland stores while studying for my Bachelor of Education in Sydney NSW. I moved straight into a store management role in Liqourland from University and during my time there was introduced to Category Management, Leadership and People

management, Revenue management, Stock control as well as being immersed in all liquor categories from Spirits to Beer. My first premium beer experience was Cascade Premium Lager and I still remember un wrapping the gold foil off the cap and the striking Tassie Tiger on the label. It was also during this time where I saw brands like Redback, Carlton Cold and Sub Zero disrupt the market and change how we marketed Beer & RTD’s. From here I further refined my sales and leadership skills with Westpac before moving back into the industry I loved with Mildara Blass in July 2000. I have been with the Fosters group since with the exception of a two year break in 2010 where I started our own importing business while also raising our four children on our farm just outside of Canberra. In 2013 with new owners at CUB the call to come back to the industry which had given me so much was too tempting to resist. I took on the role of managing the sales team in the ACT where we grew our market share by working in partnership with our customers and developing brands in the growing Mid –Strength (Great Northern), Contemporary (Carlton Dry) and Craft Beer (Fat Yak) Categories. A year ago we decided as a family to move back to Sydney in Balmain for both career and lifestyle reasons. Four months ago my current role became available and the rest is history, my family and I have settled in and have been overwhelmed by the generosity and the warmth in which we have been received by the local community in Hobart. I have been very fortunate to have worked with CUB who have provided me with opportunities to develop my career and work in various markets, all very unique. I look forward to being part of our new global parent AB-InBev where we will have access to the

resources of a truly global beer business combined with the history and local connection with the community we have here at Cascade. It is an honour to work at the Cascade Brewery which has such a rich history and to now be its custodian. I believe to be successful in business we need to be agile, never be satisfied, listen to our customers and to quote Richard Branson “surround yourself with successful people and shine in their shadow”. I look forward to growing Cascade while also having fun disrupting our competitors in areas of the beer market we have not historically played in. I am also looking forward to being a part of the local community and developing deep relationships with the trade and our business partners.
