Cook Foundation in the principal cities of India, China and Japan, at which time he had an opportunity for a wider visit to missionary stations in Syria, Egypt Siam and Korea. These lectures, which' sought to express “The Christian Convic- tion,” are published under that title. The present volume grew out of this interest and out of the conviction that world missions are now passing through a critical period in their development. He" frankly faces some of the criticisms of missions and the inherent difficulties in volved in the Work, such as problems of personnel, ¡relations of nationals and for eigners in the enterprise, the social rela tions involving" institutional changes in missionary work. He also . frankly dis cusses the essential missionary message, discussing interest involved in such terms as a “Western Christ,” or “Christ of the Indian Road,” “Christ of Asia,” and' shows that Christianity is not' a modifica tion of other faiths but a gift to the world. From this point of view he tries to show the unchanging realities in the missionary enterprise, such as the pur pose of the love of Christ and the essen tial value of humanity and its fundamen tal need, as well as the perpetual respon sibility to program the Gospel resting up on, the Christian Church. The book is a most thoughtful and in forming one and should be of great help to.;those who are endeavoring to. under stand the significance of the present crisis in the mission of the ’1 .evangelization of the' world. They soon learn that a new professor has come for "the avowed purpose of intro ducing modernism. They determine to study up so as to meet his arguments and to “declare war on modernism.” In class one day the four each chal lenge Dr. Russell publicly. T h e hour closes and the Doctor does not defend himself. He is at once called to the bed side of his wife who has been injured in an accident. She asks him to pray. He decides he can’t. He has been denying everything, then how can he pray? He sends a telegram back to the school for the four young men to pray and his wife is miraculously healed. Dr. Russell goes to a mission, where after hearing the message, he kneels and confesses that “modernism and evolution have no place for soul winning.” He surrenders his life to God. The danger we see in this book is that some over-aggressive young people might be influenced to unwise tactics in dealing with their elders. Attempts to publicly attack or challenge professors might not end as did the one recorded here. Never theless there may be individuals who are clearly led of the Spirit to publicly bear witness to the truth as an offset to errors taught in a classroom. In such a case one would surely manifest the Spirit of Christ so as not unnecessarily to antagonize others.
