who says: “It cannot be said that these sermons are not up-to-date. They have the modern viewpoint (meaning that their phrasing is not the phrasing of an age that is out of sympathy with the practice of today). But while they are thoroughly up-to-date, they do advocate a dateless religion.” They are sermons which have in them the grip of eternal verities. Twenty-five sermons are pre sented on subjects that are all timely. Preachers and laymen alike, will appre ciate this volume, published by Revell at $2.—M. E. —o— The Scandal of the Cross. Studies in the Death of Jesus B y E dwin M c N eill P oteat Dr. Poteat is a vigorous and interesting writer and independent and original in His thinking. In this book he presents a fresh and challenging study of the great central theme of evangelical religion, the death of Christ. He is true to the great evangelical interpretations but b r i n g s them out in a new and fresh way. First he gives a statement of the event as a deed and as a doctrine, then he deals with the scandal of the cross, indicating the reason for it from the point of view This New Book is being offered w ith every New subscrip t io n t o T h e K ing’s Business a t th e reg u lar rate of $1.25 in U. S., $1.50 Foreign. (Book m ay be sen t to a separate address) The book is a careful study of every passage in the Bible iti which Sheol or Hades (translated in the King James Version as Hell) is found. Also, every passage is shown Where “Hell” is “Gehenna,” and the differ ence in meaning from “Hades.” Mr. Philip Mauro, lawyer, and author of several books and pamphlets on Bible themes, says: “I have- seen so many .unsatisfactory discussions of the passage that the title rather re pelled me. But when I got into it (the book), I found my interest first awakened, and then sustained and intensified to the end. You deserve the thanks of all who love the holy Scriptures for this thorough, pains taking and illuminating study of an exceedingly important and practical (though difficult) subject.”

of the Jews and the Greeks, as well as the intellectuals of all ages. The chapter on “The Cross in Cosmic Relations” is very illuminating and im pressive. There is added to this discussion of the death of Christ, the author’s famous treatise-on “Tolstoy: Religion without Redemption.” This chapter is illustrative matter on the main theme of the book and is informing and thought provoking. Harper & Bro. $2.®J. M. M. ,—o— Catholicism and the American Mind B y W inifred E rnest G arrison Thousands of people are thinking about that great organization known as the Ro man Catholic Church at this time. They are wondering as to really what they be lieve and how they feel about what they believe. In light of the national election they are especially asking as to whether or not Catholics feel the church is su preme over the state, the hierarchy di rects the Catholic as to how to vote, what is their real attitude on the question of toleration for those who differ with them. All of these questions are discussed by Dr. Garrison in a very able and fair why. He gathers an unusual amount of in formation into 267 pages. ¡We do ,not at all agree with Dr. Gar- risoff.iq'his theological positions, but this does:’not keep us from appreciating this fine bit of work he has done in presenting in a fair and Christian manner the facts regarding the Catholic Church and its attitudes. . Those who are looking for a reliable statement that is not full of bitterness concerning the .Catholic Church would do well to read this book. Willett, Clark & Colby. $2,—J. M. M. —o— Pentecost and the Holy Spirit B y R ev . J. B. H untley This book has a twofold mi s s i o n , namely, to celebrate or to keep in mind a celebration as planned by the Disciples of Christ in their Memphis .International Convention of November, 1926. Taken for granted that the time given, A. D. 30, be correct, then the nineteen hundredth anniversary of Pentecost comes in the year 1930 and at this- date not only the disciples of Christ, but many other bodies of Christians, may be hold ing celebrations. The great mission of the book, however; and thel paramount issue of every page is to bring out the great truths of Pente cost, and the work and office of the Holy Spirit in both Testaments. No time has been".spared in research work, both from the Word itself and from the writings of others, to bring together a work honoring the Holy Spirit, loyal to the Word and the great truths which are so sadly needed today. The one chapter on “How He is Grieved” would be well worth the price of the book, for there is a fearless deal ing with some of the sins which are a curse to the Christian Church of today. One may differ with the writer in some minor points, but there is so much of real blessing in its pages, with a wealth of Scripture references in support of every aspect of the Holy Spirit and His work,

One of a series of evangel paper-back booklets printed by the Bible Institute Col- portage Association of Chicago and sell ing for ten cents each. The story touches on the “high lights” of a man’s life from birth into mature manhood, thrilling the reader by unfolding God’s method of leading a soul that has been caught in the clutches of modernism and worldli ness, back to Himself and a life of rich service. God’s instruments were the prayers of the man’s godly mother and a great tragedy in his life. The climax is reached when he is used of God to win an anarchist and rabid in fidel to the feet of Christ. The booklet of thirty-two pages will be used to strengthen the- faith of Christians and reassure them as to the value of prayer “without ceasing.”:—N. P.
