flood of light upon the life, thinking and language that form thè background of the New Testament. Doran & Co. $10.00. —J. M. M. — o — Reality In Religion B y G ilbert T. R ow e , D.D. This book is composed of material pre pared for the Quillian Lectures delivered at Emory University in 1927. It discusses the nature of religion, the symbols in re ligion, scientific religion, the.. scientific method in religion, the powet-■ot--religion and finality in religion. It gathers to gether a great deal of interesting material bearing on these questions, maintaining that religion is communion with God, Many will differ from the author in his way of stating this essential fact, but all who read it thoughtfully cannot help but be stimulated by his vigorous way of stating his. convictions ; the permanent element in Christianity is in Jesus Christ and there is finality in Him and in the revelation which comes through Him. He is the final revelation :of God and if God did not speak in Him, He has been dumb from the foundation of the world, and through Him we have access to the eter nal, for in Him the veil was taken away. While the book is very stimulating we do not agree with the author in many of his positions. Cokesbury Press. $1.75— J. M. M. —Or— '- Princes of the Christian Pulpit and Pastorate B y H arry C lay H oward When we come to consider the princes of the Christian pulpit, there is always a very real difficulty to make, a selection. Professor Howard has made a very good selection and gives to us fifteen pastors of interest and insight. Biographies are always interesting, and it is almost impos sible for a man of genuine understanding to touch the lives of men like Francis of Assisi, Savonarola, John Knox, John Wesley* David Livingstone, Alexander McLaren and Alexander Whyte without firing his imagination and being stimu lated to constructive thinking. Professor Howard uses a clear, easy style.-and is very thoughtful in His con sideration of the men; who have-been flaming witnesses to different ages of the Church of Christ. One of the things that will impress the reader as he turns the pages of the Story of these men, is that many of them were the heretics of their day and were ac tually crowded out of the church, some of them having been driven into the fields and sorely persecuted. It is almost im possible for us to believe they could have been martyred for their devotion to hon esty, truth and unselfishness, but such was the case with men like Savonarola, Knox, Wesley and others. Cokesbury Press. $2.50.—J. M. M. When the Song of the Lord Began Bv W illiam E dward B iederwolf Anything from the pen of Dr. W. E. Biederwolf would be worth while, but here is a book crowded with living mes sages which thrill the soul. It delves into the deepest recesses of the life, lifts one into heavenly places.
