are alone with God, stripped of every rag of self-righteousness, while the x-ray is turned on and the Searcher of hearts is looking into the secret places. We ex claim “Wretched man that I am,” but we are not left in such straits long until an other chord is struck, a nail-pierced hand touches ours, and we come into the pres ence of the Overcomer, and we see Him. oUr Pattern, and instinctively we want to be more like Him. Again a warning note is struck, that in this life, of victory we should be careful that Samson’S'experience may not be ours ---that of unconscious spiritual loss, and we find the old landmarks pointing the way "“back to Bethel?’:;?; Once begin to read this book and you cannot drop it. You will thank God after its perusal that you have, still an oppor tunity to go out and really live, for Him and with Him. Published by Bible Insti tute Colportage Assn., price 75 cents.— T. H. B. I—-o— ■ Six Miracles of Calvary B y B ishop W illiam R. N icholson , D.D. One of the most' fascinating booklet?' that has come to the writer in a long time is Bishop Nicholson’s little treatise on the miracles connected with Calvary, recently sent out by the Colportage Association of .Chicago (40 cents). The six miracles which are related to our Saviour’s re deeming work are : the miraculous dark ness (Lk. 23:44, 45) ; the rending of the veil (Mt. 27:51); the earthquake (Mt. 27 :51) ; the opened graves (Ml. 27:52) ; the undisturbed grave clothes , (Jn. 20: 6 - 8 ) ; and the revivals to life in the Calvary graveyard (Mt. 27:52-53). There are many points about these passages that have been perplexing to Bible students, and here, in small compass, will be found most _satisfying explanations. Especially illuminating is the. chapter on the miracle of the opened graves. Dr. Nicholson points out that while the graves were opened at the instant, of Christ’s death as the result of the earthquake, the bodies in them are not said to have come out till after His own resurrection, thus leaving Christ, as Paul' states, “the first :;fruits,” Another point of interest is the' opinion that these who came forth from the Jeru salem graveyard, did not possess the final glorified body, but simply the natural body revivified, as in the case of Lazarus (Jn. 11). Possibly they had but recently died; for we are told that they were recog nized in the city. Grave doors do not have to be removed to let out spiritual bodies? : When Lazarus was called back, the command was given to remove the stone to let him out of the tomb, but our Lord, in His resurrection body, left the tomb before the stone was removed. Laz arus came back to this life in a revived, mortal body with the same liabilities as before and even now awaits: “a better resurrection.” Hence the true resurrec tion is very different from revivification. Scripture is silent as to whether these re vived saints, like Lazarus, later died again, or, like Enoch and Elijah, were translated and are being preserved until the second coming of Christ, then to re ceive the full glorified state.—K.
