Practical Training: XPS Amicus SURFACE SCIENCE

XPS Supra Instrument: Advanced Training UPS and Depth Profiling

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) allows one to determine the elements present on a sample’s surface (detection limit approximately 1%), as well as the chemical state or chemical environment of each element. This is achieved by determining the binding energy of photoelectrons emitted from a sample when exposed to x-rays of known energy. This course gives an overview of the specifications of the characterization tool. Users will learn how to prepare and transfer samples, as well as how to acquire, process, and export data. Safety aspects will also be discussed. Upon comple- tion of the course, users will be qualified to operate the XPS Amicus instrument. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry who want to identify, quanti- fy, and investigate the chemical state of elementals in the sample surface (~10 nm). Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) provides information on valence levels and work function of materials. The XPS Supra instrument is equipped with an Argon cluster ion source for sample cleaning or depth profiling. This course provides an overview of the instrument. Users will learn how to acquire and export data, UPS spectra, and Depth profile. They will also be exposed to data processing for elemental quantification. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified for the use of the UPS technique and argon cluster gun.
