XPS Supra Instrument: Basic Training SURFACE SCIENCE

XPS Ultra Instrument: Advanced Training UPS and Depth Profiling

Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) provides information on valence levels and work function of materials. The XPS Supra instrument is equipped by monatomic Argon ion source for sample cleaning or depth profiling. This course introduces advanced UPS and Depth profiling using the instrument. Participants will learn how to acquire UPS spectra and Depth profile, process data for ele- mental quantification, and export data. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified for the use of the UPS technique and monatomic Argon gun. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) allows one to determine the elements present on a sample’s surface, as well as the chemical state or chemical envi- ronment of each element. This is achieved by determining the binding energy of photoelectrons emitted from a sample when exposed to x-rays of known energy. This course introduces the XPS Supra instrument and Vacuum. Users will learn about sample preparation and transfer, spectra acquisition in both manual and automatic mode, data processing for elemental quantification, and data export. Safety aspects will also be discussed. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to operate the XPS Supra instrument.
