Atomic Force Microscope Basic Training

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) allows one to determine the elements present on a sample’s surface, as well as the chemical state or chemical envi- ronment of each element. This is achieved by determining the binding energy of photoelectrons emitted from a sample when exposed to x-rays of known energy. This course introduces the XPS Ultra instrument and vacuum. Participants will learn about the specifications of the characterization tool. Topics covered in- clude: acquiring and exporting data, sample preparation, sample transfer, acquir- ing spectra in both manual and automatic mode, data processing for elemental quantification, and data export. Safety aspects will also be discussed. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to operate the XPS Ultra instrument. PARTICIPANT PROFILE This course is intended for students and research professionals from KAUST, and their collaborators from academia and industry. PREREQUISITES • Active Badger account

This training teaches and qualifies users for the operation of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). AFM is a member of the Scanning Probe Microscope Family. It uses a very sharp tip (the radius at its very top is around 10 nm) to do the surface measurement. By recording the interaction between the tip and sample surface, not only the 3D topography but also various physical properties can be measured, such as frictional property, distribution of magnetic domain, or electric potation. This course introduces the basic principles of AFM, with demos and hands-on practice. Participants will master basic operations of the imagining mode, results exportation, and data analysis. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to operate the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).
