Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM) Training

Current Sensing AFM (CSAFM) is an advanced AFM imaging mode. In CSAFM, an ultra-sharp AFM cantilever, coated with conducting film, probes the conduc- tivity and topography of the sample’s surface. A bias voltage is applied to the sample while the cantilever is kept at virtual ground. As in Contact Mode, the tip force is held constant throughout the scan. The current is used to construct the Conductivity image. This course introduces the basic principles of CSAFM, with demos and hands-on practice. Participants will master basic operation of the imaging mode. They will learn how to export and analyze results. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to independently operate Current Sensing AFM (CSAFM). This training teaches and qualifies users to operate the Kelvin Force Microsco- py (KFM) advanced AFM imaging mode. In KFM, an additional feedback loop applies a DC bias to the tip to counteract deflection due to the surface electro- static force. The output from this feedback loop provides a quantitative analysis of changes in the applied or intrinsic electrostatic field of the sample. This course introduces the basic principles of KFM, through demos and hands- on practice. Participants will master basic operation of the imaging mode, results exportation, and data analysis.
