NanoTest Vantage Training

MFM is an advanced AFM imaging mode. In MFM, the AFM tip is coated with a thin magnetic film. The magnetic (dipole) moment (m) of the AFM tip couples to the stray magnetic field emanating from the sample surface, giving rise to the magnetic force between the tip and the sample. The gradient of the magnetic field above the sample surface leads to a gradient of the tip-sample force, which then alters the cantilever’s motion. At a given drive frequency, the phase and the amplitude of the cantilever oscillations change. These changes can be recorded pixel by pixel to generate an MFM image. When the phase signal is mapped in this way, an MFM phase image is created. This course introduces the basic principles of MFM, with demos and hands-on practice. Participants will master basic operations of the imagining mode, results exportation, and data analysis. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to operate the Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM). NanoTest Vantage is a flexible modular materials testing system. It employs a hard tip whose mechanical properties are known (frequently made of a very hard material like diamond) to measure sample deformation under small load. The load displacement data can be used to analyze mechanical properties of thin films and other solid surfaces, such as hardness, modulus, toughness, fracture, fatigue, wear, and fretting. This course introduces the basic principles of NanoTest Vantage, with demos and hands-on practice. Participants will master basic operation, results exporta- tion, and data analysis of the system. Upon completion of the course, users will be qualified to operate NanoTest Vantage.
